It appears that, in 2017, itshay beaters and engine swaps are the "in" thing :o

I disagree.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

I added some information here about the swap.

http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=54332.msg667982#msg667982

Over 500km driven now.
Odometer on the Redoo was ~224,000km when the swap happened.
Mileage on the JDM engine was ~89,000km based on what was written on the timing belt cover.

Specific to this car, some other notes to add now that the new heart is falling into place:
- There's a belt squeak. Need to tighten that.
- It needs a power steering fluid flush.
- It is imperative that the tint come off the windows. Oh. My. God.
- After 1 empirical tank of gas, mileage has improved from 10.4l/100km to 9.6l/100km

Also of note, the ej201 is SOO SMOOV!!
Holy crap.
I can barely even tell that the engine is running, both at idle and at speed.
The RPMs keep climbing and suddenly you're doing 20 over the speed limit without noticing.

Is it possible, and I'm just spitballing here, that an engine on the verge of death feels "off"?

Good call.

In my experience they usually feel "oddly good" right before they pop.  >_<

Despite my love of turbos, I have actually had more than a couple cars with NA ej25s.
You know how we all say "it's a subaru, that's just a subaru thing!" when they make noise and rattle and shake in the engine bay?

Yeah, not so much.
It's almost like the EJ should never have gone beyond 2L (or perhaps the bulletproof 2.2L)

So in other words, there's only replacement for displacement?

If you lock yourself in a bathroom and say "snackers" three times into a mirror really fast... you'll find out.
