Help w/ ordering a new saddle?
« on: September 05, 2017, 03:11:24 pm »
Apparently I recently decided to start putting money into my bike. I got some new forks for it, am looking for a good deal on some new brakes, I've never customized a cockpit before so I'm contemplating a new bar/stem/grip upgrade. This leaves me with the seat, the stock Specialized one hurts my assay after more than an hour. Looking on CRC leads me to believe I know nothing about saddle "tech", and some of the prices seem insane. The two below stood out to me, honestly a lot being due to price:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ca/en/sdg-bel-air-steel-saddle/rp-prod111702

I like the look and price of the first one (canvas), but the SDG (in red) has solid reviews saying how comfortable it is. I'm leaning this way simply based on comfort. Thoughts? I could also look on PB used, haven't in a few weeks.

Thanks

Apparently I was viewing based on review rating and not price, so I found a few other options:

I think $50 is about where I cap out for saddle budget.

Find a place that has a Spesh butt-bone measuring tool.  They measure the distance between your sit bones (or you can ) to help you find the proper width.

Since doing that I've found seats that are much more comfortable.  I'm running Specialized Avatar's on all of my bikes.  Good luck with that!
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

Some shops offer demo saddles so you can get an idea of what you are in for if they don't have have the fancy sitting device. Or some places will offer to take the saddle back if still is sell-able condition.

This is always a questions i get of which saddle is the most comfortable its always personal. I always ask if they are using a chamois short because that will make a huge difference in comfort

I usually wear board shorts actually. Are the ones you mentioned the padded ones?

I wear bib shorts under board shorts.  Super comfortable.

you got it.

As the price goes up on a liner or short the padding or construction will change.  If you haven't had a short liner before it will be a good improvement on comfort for you
