The engine is in the car, couple of days worth of pluming and it should be running!

Special thanks to SausageCat (former WSC'er for help and getting wedged under the car)

IT RUNS!!!

After months of putting this off, replacing the cam, fixing electrical gremlins, and work getting in the way I finally successfully started this mother f'r.

Whats happening above is the first successful startup and 5mins worth of running during cam break-in. With flat lifter cam's you need to let it run at over 2000RPM for 20mins to break them in properly or you get something looking like the below image (FYI if you look closely you can see the flat f'd up part). Its what happens if you keep cranking and no break-in. In the last attempt I had electrical issues and I couldn't seem to get a consistent spark and startup; then when it did run the idle was completely messed because of the damage to the cam:

I'll provide more details later after I've driven it :)

Thanks guys, I drove it around a bunch today, it pulls pretty hard and so far its scary fast, but it still needs a break-in period. I'm going to need to do some tuning over the next while (also get an alignment), but overall I'm super happy with the results

Looking at your signature - just a heads up, this is one of those vehicles you DON'T sell once you're done. That's a beauty.

Hmm, now that you mention it, some vehicles are missing.  Like the jailbait Civic.

I like how there's a fire extinguisher on each side of the car.  Please post more pics and videos :)

Took old Herb out for the evening, running great, looking good. I'm so happy with how this car turned out.

Automotive archeology at its finest. I found this under the rear seat, did VW actually give this to customers in Canada? Crazy...

FYI there’s absolutely no English anywhere in that owners manual, and it’s the only one I’ve found in the car.

Got some new 7" X 15" rear rims and lowered the back of the car 2.5" with some new swing axle plates (images for the build coming soon). I'm happy with the stance, but I might lower the front of the car just a tiny bit more (1/2" or less) so I can take advantage of that adjustable front beam  ^-^

more to come (New pedal-box, carpets, and maintenancy stuff)

I can't wait to one day see this in person
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

Learning how to paint with a proper gun for fun (they're dirt cheap these days if you already have a meh air compressor)

Short story I'm going to back date the car to old style headlights and ditch the fender indicators for a cleaner look with them integrated into headlights (also someone backed into a fender and bent it)

The insides will be coated with a rock guard paint similar to a truck bed

The end result should be pretty subtle, but the bottom picture is what I'm going for (minus the indicators)

Post 67 Beetles (smaller protruding headlights) <-- Looks like a fat kid hunting for a pack of smarties...

Pre-67 Beetles (flat larger headlights)

More to come (including wet sanding and buffing plus install)

Fenders, headlights, and taillights all backdated to an early 60s beetle and I couldn’t be happier. It took hours of wet sanding and polishing but it got to where it needed to be. Admittedly if I had taken my time with the painting process it would have gone faster.

Before tons of wet sanding and polishing

After tons of wet sanding and polishing (uckfay this took forever and could have been avoided with more prep and taking my time with the gun)

You've come a long way baby

I would also like to see this in person. I'm not one to remember any of the little changes between generations of Beetles but I am one to enjoy the sound and feel of them.

I'll bring it to this Tuesday night's WSC meetup if the weather cooperates.

Small update, but I now have a rear sway bar in a car that never had one stock. It makes it almost safe to drive (almost).

Complete pain in the assay to put in, depending on how low the car is it'll require different mounting points to be drilled into the frame. Figured I wouldn't attempt it until I was happy with the stance.

Another thing to make this car a little safer, modern headlights, well LED headlights that won’t tax a 50 year old wiring loom. (left is old “can’t see itshay”, right is new “oh look there’s a deer”)

Also a rock took out one of my fogs and so I got these slightly smaller slightly more vintage fogs (bottom are the new fogs)
