fox float and stroke length
« on: April 27, 2018, 02:53:52 pm »
Hey bike techs of WSC.
Looking to replace my ittshay CCDB air on my knolly chilcoltin.

Theres three shocks on PB that catch my eye.
used Float RP 23, 200mm x 55mm stroke
2015 Rockshox Monarch RT HV (no reservoir) 200x57
RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 200x57

I think I would #1 want the float, but I'm wondering if its possible to convert it to a 57mm stoke (i imagine its just a travel restricting spacer).
Does anyone know?
I would send it over to Fox right away for a rebuild and a tune.

Oh theres also this monarch debonair that would fit.
Any opinions on these shocks?

Monarch hands down. Out of the three options the monarch is a better shock.

I really liked the feeling of the plus Rc3. Great adjustability and the option of adding volume spacers changes the game. I find my fox float CTD if very soft and lacks the adjustability to make it feel proper to ride even with the CTD option. I hopped on a pivot demo bike and had the monarch feeling like butter in minutes.

Well I think we can all agree that CTD shocks suck chode.
I heard the RP23 is akin to the Fox Float DHX Air 5.0 of olden dayes. And imma let you finish but the DHX air was the best shock ever made.
I've heard the monarchs (even the RC3) without the debonair canister are sticky and awful at high speed small compression dampening.
Not that I dont believe you.

Eveyone at the local bike shops rocks a monarch on their trail bikes, I’m sure that’s just from coincidence. I’ve tried to fan boi fox for years, but their itshays expensive, in constant need of service, and gave me nothing better than a rock shox.

Your call man. given that the shock actually doesn’t even fit the stroke, I would avoid the fox

Thx man for the advice. I've contacted both the debonair dude and the rc3 dude and we'll see who responds first lol.
Also sent email to fox asking about conversion to 57mm.
My g/f's bike has a float DHX air 5.0 and it feels phenomenal, hasnt required many rebuilds (one since owning the bike), and the rebuild was cheap ($120 ish incl a cartridge replacement). And honestly it didnt feel THAT bad with the blown out shock.... Kind of reminds me of my old timey 888's... worked forever and even after they broke they still felt pretty decent.

I was on Fox CTD on my last bike and it doesn’t hold a candle to the RC3 on the new bike.

I think the RP23 leans a bit more towards the gravity side than the CTD. But it is clearly not intended for long gravity runs which would create a ton of heat.

I love my DHX Air 5.0. I put a smaller volume air can on it and the thing is fantastic.
