Ticking in Head
« on: September 11, 2018, 01:23:01 pm »
I've had this ticking in my head since I bought the car (I bought it used with 60K). At first I thought it might have to do with the release bearing, but have since replaced the clutch and all workings and it's still there. I've checked the manifolds and have not spotted a leak, although I'm not entirely ruling out a leak in the manifold. Its hard to tell cause the exhaust is so loud to begin with.
Anyways, I don't hear the ticking until I get the RPMs above 2600, then its a very rapid and light tick that possibly goes away after 3600 RPM (again really hard to tell because the exhaust is so loud). I've had the engine compression tested and it's not a con rod bearing (too quiet and not persistent enough to be shot bearing) so I'm left with a valve out of adjustment?
I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem, if anyone has any other ideas and if anyone else has ever had their valves adjusted? From what I've read it's something to consider, and I was going to call Subaru and see what they say for price and time frame of a valve adjust, but I trust you guys waaaaaay more than Subaru Calgary.

I, too, would trust a forum of garage mechanics “waaaaaay more” than a shop of trained technicians that specialize in your make of vehicle. Totally.

I meant no disrespect to any qualified Subaru techs. If you want to have a look at my car you’re more than welcome. If you can give me an honest and educated answer to my question I’d even be willing to pay you. But if you want to be a condescending Dick, we can go there too. My experience wth Subaru Calgary has been horrible. On multiple occasions. But again, no disrespect meant.
I was only wondering if anyone had any better ideas as to what the sound might be or having their valves adjusted. I highly doubt it’s injector tick. Seems way too loud for that.
I’ll be at the meet tonight though and would love for someone with more knowledge of these engines than myself to give me their opinion. You can even take her for a spin around the block. Can’t hear the tick at idle barely at all.

I've had this ticking in my head since I bought the car

See a shrink or sell the car.  Subarus can cause mental health problems, for sure.

It's been 3 years since I sold mine, and my wife still has PTSD. She's banned me from owning another Subaru.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

As valves wear, the clearances get tighter. Noisy valves are happy valves (to a point). The clearances won't get looser (and noisier) unless something ugly happened.

There are two heads... Is it distinctly coming from one side? Stethoscopes can be had dirt cheap and easy to use.

I may scream like a dainty lady, but I punch like a fairly strong 11-year-old.
