Best Bang For Buck Laptop
« on: February 06, 2019, 01:41:46 PM »
Looking to pick up a basic laptop for browsing the internet and streaming movies etc. I don't need anything crazy as I have a fully built PC I use for editing and occasional gaming.

So in your opinion what is the best bang for buck "basic" laptop out there right now? I would like it to have a 13" - 15" screen. I will only be using this for browsing the internet, playing music and streaming movies/TV shows. Also, while on vacation I would like to transfer all my GoPro footage onto it daily to free up space on my SD cards (but all editing will be done on my PC).

As for price, I guess anything under like $1000 but the cheaper the better.

Thanks!

I did search and found a few threads here on the forum but they are all at least one year old.

$1000 you are in this weird sort of price range. Anything under $750 is pretty trash.

Ideally you want an ultraportable with half decent specs. Try to find one without a dedicated GPU so its a bit better on battery life.

My personal recommendation is a Asus Zenbook or Dell XPS 13. Typically with dell you can stack some coupons and ebates and walk away feeling like you got a decent deal.

Something like this would do the trick just fine.  You could even go as far as looking at a Chromebook frankly.

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX72402

This thing has a Core i5, with a 1TB solid state drive.  Quick transfers from your Gopro through usb3.0.  I'm no big fan of all the bloat that comes with these things, but usually pretty easy to remove with a bit of searching.

For an Ultrabook, this thing is pretty cute for a 14" screen.

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX72837

Has a decent Core i5 again.  Only 256GB SSD, but should be enough for your uses.  Has USB 3.1 Type-C if you need it.  Wireless ac.

Or you can do something crazy like go for a convertible type like this.

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX74178

Your giving up some specs.  Only a Core i3, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD.  But again, your use case doesn't really require much.

Nice thing is with something portable like this, if you plan to use it while travelling.  With Windows 10, you can download the Netflix app through the Windows store and it will allow you to download movies / episodes that are available to be downloaded for offline viewing.  Same thing with the Microsoft Film and TV app.

I asked LDS the same question and he recommended a refurbished Lenovo:

I want something for word processing and excel.

I use this for work laptop when I travel or work from home:

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834850697&ignorebbr=1&source=region&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwordsCA-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwordsCA-PC-_-pla-_-Notebooks-_-N82E16834850697&gclid=CjwKCAiAqOriBRAfEiwAEb9oXXc83j2-XMDo7O78PNb4flnpqv7nkrCmYkkleMpxlNFu4HUrOuXMyBoCE2QQAvD_BwE

You can get them refurbished from Bauer Systems Group for around $1100.

My only complaint is 8 GB of ram. But for everything you listed you won't have any issues.

I just cannot believe what you guys pay for internet browser laptops.

Intel HD 620 graphics will do. RAM can be easily upgraded.

Amazon.com searched for "laptops under $400
Example:
HP 2019 14" Laptop - Intel Core i3 - 8GB Memory - 128GB Solid State Drive - Ash Silver Keyboard Frame (14-CF0014DX) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KNLVRJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9U5wCb003HB7Q

I can buy it for you and carry it on my next flight to Calgary.

FFS. Don't spend $1000 on a laptop.

Not upgradable on a fair few laptops lately. Otherwise +1

Yeah, some RAM is soldered in there. Either way, for a browsing machine, 8GB is plenty. Even 4GB is fine.

I currently have chrome open (admittedly a memory hog) with 3 tabs: one being music, one being youtube, and one being WSC. I also have a PDF, a word document, and excel open.

6.5 GB of ram is being used. If I run 1 calculation in excel I hit 7.2-3 ish. Everything I just mentioned is fairly basic. How are you guys getting away with 4GB?

Windows is pretty good about memory management. If you only have 4GB, it's pretty aggressive swapping stuff to the hard drive.

8GB does improve the experience though. 8 to 16GB is much less noticeable.

What about something like a Surface Go? I've been looking at getting one for work. Something to take notes with at meetings, be able to bring up PDF's and emails wherever I am, etc.

I haven't received notification. I assume it's on its way because Cagare's is either in transit or delivered.

Oh. Then it hasn't. It's not in order of who ordered first.

Thanks for all the input guys!

What about something like this: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/lenovo-t450s-ultrabook-intel-core-i5-5th-gen-12-gb-ram-480-gb-ssd-win-10-1-year-warranty-refurbished/12884306.aspx?

It isn't the prettiest computer but the specs look great and I don't mind buying refurbished to save some money.

No HDMI, but you can probably buy an adaptor if you need it.

It has a mini-DisplayPort output, which you can definitely buy an adapter for, if needed. Only thing that sucks is lack of FHD screen (1920x1080).

That would be my only complaint as well. Have you considered ordering directly from IBM using the EPP discount?

My work T450 had the HDD crash back in December and I lost everything. Not the same specs as the one you posted though. Really sucked, I had just setup our new cloud backup but it wasn't syncing yet and I was too busy with Q4 to call service and deal with it, figured I would after the holidays. Lost 3.5 years worth of stuff. Have a T470 now with the cloud sync setup. I do like them from a laptop perspective, and loved the one I had prior to the HDD crash.

Went to Best Buy yesterday with plans to buy a laptop but didn’t end up picking anything up. I’m so indecisive I couldn’t pick out which one to go with. I didn’t think choosing a laptop was going to be such a pain haha.

Went back and ended up picking up the new Lenovo Ideapad 330S. I7, 8 GB ram (upgradeable), 1920x1080, 250 GB SSD in a 15.6” screen. Ended up getting it brand new for $750 which is a pretty solid deal as other places I saw it they were selling for $850-$1000.
