Oil type?? SUBARU STI
« on: March 31, 2019, 05:38:24 PM »
Hello guys, I just recently picked up a 2008 Subaru STI hatchback. It currently has a stage 2 tune.

I want to do an oil change, but just want your guys advice on what you think the best full syntheric oil is?  And which is should I be using?

Thanks!
Carter

It's oil. I don't think there is such a thing as a "best" brand of oil. Changing it regularly, or at least before it runs out of life, and ensuring you're not running low is more important than brand. Buy your brand of allegiance and monitor usage.

This mostly... A drop in oil level combined with fun turbo time usually ends in sadness.

That said; I think Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (5W-30), Motul 8100 (5W-40), or Rotella T6 (5W-40) are the favourites around here. The Pennzoil is good value when it's on sale at Canadian Tire.

Awesome thanks guys, appreciate it!

Anybody have any experience with the Motul 5w40 synthetic? A guy at VEX performance told me that he would recommend putting this is a tuned subaru

Motul is great oil and is recommended by many Subaru engine builders/tuners. I've switched to using Motul in all of my vehicles except my 02 WRX Wagon which still gets Rotella T6 5w40.

I even used Motul's mineral break in oil for when I had the engine in my Forester XT rebuilt not long after my ownership. I basically followed IAG's break-in recommendations.

Considering the quality I don't mind the little extra cost.

Eh, I think for most people, it's the equivalent of putting 94 octane into a car that takes 89. If it helps your peace of mind, though, go nuts.

Agreed, and that's why my 02 gets the cheaper and still very capable T6.

The vehicles I run Motul in are either simply higher performance engines, or engines that are built up and have internal modifications. Personally I do get a bit more piece of mind when I'm beating on them here and there. That being said I have yet to get some samples to see how it's holding up, especially in my Forester.

Wicked, thank you guys very much for the feedback! I appreciate it

I always was running t6 on my previous two JDM Subie’s with no issues, but now that I have a 2008 stage 2 STI I’m going to give motul a go!

I'm using Rotella t6, no complaints.  I've heard amsoil is the best.  Sorry no evidence and probably no difference unless your max verstappen out there.

Stage 2 isn't highly modified.  I think Rotella would be fine. If you do go Motul, it'd be nice if you got samples tested.

I have a sample UOA of Motul 8100 X-Cess from in my WRX build thread. I intend on getting one done for the Foz as well.
