2008 Outback Lowering Idea
« on: April 08, 2019, 03:23:12 pm »
**Before anyone comments on why I would want to lower and Outback, or advice me to buy a different car, etc., please press the back button and read something else. Thank you!**

So I'm having thoughts of lowering the Outback with a "set and forget" kit, and based on reading on LegacyGT and SubaruOutback the mostly suggested set are LGT take-offs and JDM Bilsteins.
I've been doing some searching on forums and local classifieds only to find nothing.

Now I've been thinking of another option (please correct if I'm wrong), but would quick struts from the same generation Legacy GT or 2.5i fit a 2008 Outback?
Looking at Rockauto.com, the part numbers for them are identical.

I've read the reviews on these things and it's a 50/50 on the feedback. Only reason I even looked at this set is because I remember that they offer lifetime warranty as long as I own the vehicle.
Another option I can see right now is buying by part: KYB shocks, top mounts, dust boots, bump stops.

Some questions I need confirmation on:
1. Is the suspension for Legacy sedans the same? In terms of height?
2. If I go with buying separate parts, do I have a complete list? Shocks (front & rear), top mounts, dust boots, springs, bump stops, rear upper control arms(?).

If I missed anything or if anyone wants to throw some ideas and information, feel free to do so.

Thanks for reading!

Quick struts from the legacy from the same years would bolt right up. Sedan struts would cause major bum sag so make sure to get wagon rears.
Lowering without taking out spacers may cause alignment issues but nothing huge at legacy height.
You'll probably be best off with camber bolts in the front and a whiteline rear camber kit.

Lowered an Outback with Legacy GT springs and Koni strut inserts. The rear suspension had some "ghost walk" issues on slippery surfaces, due to the camber and toe curves being out of designed range. It was fixed to a drivable state with rear camber bushings, but the geometry still was not ideal. To do this properly, it requires removing the body spacers.

Thanks for the replies!

Did a little more reading last night and found out that the struts are the same for sedan & wagons, only difference is that wagons get a stiffer spring rate to compensate for the heavier rear end.

Read this write-up:
https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/lgt-wagon-suspension-swapped-into-outback-xt-140548.html

And so far all he needed was the LGT wagon suspension and the bumpstops.

If I will be running stock LGT height, maybe I won't need to worry too much about the rear alignment going so far out of whack.
Being that the Whiteline kit is uber pricey, I found an alignment bolt for toe adjustment on Rockauto as well: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10148232&cc=1430732&jsn=524

Of course alignment will be done after this.

I was talking about this "kit": http://get-primitive.com/alignment-solutions/176-2000-09-legoutback-rear-camber-kit.html
Never used the rock auto bolt
Might be a good idea to do this to help avoid ghostwalk: https://motoiq.com/ghostwalk-the-whip-fixing-subaru-bump-steer-with-whiteline-bushings/

Thanks for the links, Josh!

Looks like the part you have posted is for camber. The one I posted specified toe, so I guess they could go hand-in-hand?
I'll be contacting a guy locally that has a yard full of Subarus and ask him if he has an LGT wagon around.

So far the parts list:
LGT wagon shocks/springs
Rear bump stops
Rear upper control arm (?)
Toe correcting bolt/arm
Camber bolts for the front

Ah I guess I read a bit too fast... Looks they could work together. I beleive one of the issues with the stock suspension is that camber and toe can't be adjusted independently.
I think I read somewhere that the rear upper control arms should only be replaced when you take the spacers out but It's been a while.
Good luck!

I guess I should start with just the struts and go from there and gauge what else I need.
Thanks again for the input!
