2001 sti LOCKED ECU
« on: October 19, 2018, 09:43:47 pm »
Hello, I bought a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 cable from Tactrix a while back and have finally gotten around to taking my car to a shop and attempt to get a tune done.

The car is a 2001 Subaru WRX STI (bugeye GDB variant) and is from the JDM market.
The operating system of my laptop is windows 10.
I’m a complete amateur at all things tuning so I sent the car into shop and they are saying after many tries there is nothing they can do as it was either tuned previously and the tuner locked the ECU or there isn’t any support for the specific car. They’re recommending I switch to Ecutech as they would be able to tune with that.

Is there a solution to this that you guys recommend? I messaged the previous owner and he says that the car wasn’t tuned over his ownership. I have also sent an email to Tactrix with this same info but have heard it may take some time to get a reply.

I'm located in Victoria, B.C. The shop (paradigm auto works) is quite reputable and owns the only AWD dyno on Vancouver Island so I doubt they are lying to me to sell me Ecutech.
Would really appreciate the help because it’s already getting pricey and I’m not keen on spending an additional $900 on Ecutech if it’s not necessary.
One option I have heard of is possible buying a stock 2001 sti ecu and installing that, or having the ecu shipped to a company that can wipe it. Again, i'm the furthest thing from an expert on this stuff so insight would be appreciate it.

What happens when you try to read the ROM with ECUFlash?
I may scream like a dainty lady, but I punch like a fairly strong 11-year-old.

"[15:16:39.283] using metadata XML ID read_wrx02 from file C:/Program Files (x86)/OpenECU/EcuFlash/rommetadata/read templates/read_wrx02.xml

Tried with and without the connectors connected if that makes any difference.

If the test connector and loop-back connector are plugged in, the rad fans should cycle on/off with the key on, engine off.

There is also a second set of green test connectors behind the side panel in the foot well.

Gain 50 ft-lbs, ask me how! :-)

Yeah the tuner tried with every combination of the black and green unplugged/ plugged ass-well as with or without the blue relay/adapter supplied by tactrix plugged in. Do you have any suggestions as to what my options are if the ECU is infaxt locked froma previous tune?

If the car does go into test mode (fans cycling) but ecuflash won't read the ECU then it could already have EcuTek tune on it or it has another aftermarket ECU (Zero Sports?).  Take the ECU out and check for stickers?  If it already has EcuTek tune on it then your tuner wouldn't need to use up another license to program it.

So I have gotten in contact with a tuner in Vancouver that has helped me out. His thoughts are that it is in fact locked with EcuTek as I checked the ecu and it's still the stock Denso ecu that comes from the factory. I'll probably take it over to him as he says he can just tune it with the existing EcuTek license on the ecu without any additional charge as apposed to the tuner I was at locally wanting to charge me a great deal to do the same thing. So that's the plan. I'm just going to find some time to go over to the mainland and either have him just make up a new EcuTek tune or wipe the license with his EcuTek and opensource tune it with my Tactrix cable if all else fails.
