2013 STI Stock tune or Protune
« on: September 04, 2019, 07:46:42 am »
What’s up guys I’m back again I have a 2013 sti sale lined up that I’ve had my eyes on for a while now, pretty excited about the car as it’s been garage stored it’s entire life and was barely driven has low kms. I have no intentions to mod this car but I am wondering if perhaps getting a pro tune would be a smart idea vs running the stock oem tune that people say is sketchy, plus we’ve all heard of oem non modified engines blowing.

Just wanted to know your thoughts/ feels on this topic.  should I plan to book for a tune immediately after purchase, or will I be fine with out?

Thanks

Since I presume it won't have any warranty, I'd absolutely go the pro-tune / e-tune route. There's nothing to lose and only to gain in doing so. (Reliability as you mentioned, potentially bit more power, smoother, etc.)

(If you had warranty and planned on keeping it bone stock then it would be a different story.)

Nothing to lose with a protune if warranty is finished, but reliability wise there is a few other things you could crack into first that would be beneficial. Replacing the oem pick up tube, or cylinder 4 cooling mod have been proven to help.

If you plan on doing any autocross or hard sprinted driving I would also look into killer b windage tray and a quality AOS or catch can

The stock tune is a bit sketchy, and it's chunky. The car is safer, and so much nicer to drive with a tune. I wouldn't stress that you need to get it done immediately, but sooner the better. Go see Airboy in Calgary for an OpenSource tune. A bit cheaper and better than getting a COBB AccessPort, but you don't get a neat little palm pilot to play with.

To add to this however he doesn't/can't/won't tune when the temps get too low. And it typically takes a bit to get an appointment as he's fairly busy. So keep that in mind. Airboy is definitely worth the wait however.

I would recommend changing out the downpipe + tune going the "stage 2" route. If tuner recommends, intake and ebcs as well

Oh Subaru...
"You should definitely get a tune, because the stock one has 'issues'. And since you're going to tune it anyways, you should do these mods."

How I don't miss that.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

Ehhh. Just about every car will benefit from tuning.

Subaru just wanted to stretch their 80's tech until 2020. And for what it's worth, I'll give you a no-guarantees "at least it's better than stock" tune for a 12 pack. The infrastructure is there to easily correct what makes a Subaru a Subaru.
