Corded tyres?
Gotta keep em in good shape.

Yea, totes are a requirement for the condo life. :P

But having tires in the living room is nothing to sneeze at when you're married. ;)

Agreed!

So no new tires under the totes? Does this mean you'll be driving my car at Stratotech? ;)

I'm trading wheels and tires for that weekend with a very generous guy.

So, as much as I might not want to admit that it's winter (in fact I'm even signed up for a Time Attack on the 17th) the "winterization" of my car continues unabated.

My battery (OEM 5+ years old) was finally reaching the end of it's life. The wife managed to drain it by listening to the radio & having the heated seats on... Something it'd previously withstood for hours. Also, the Defi's are wired into a power source that isn't interrupted when cranking (so if I feel like it, I can crank until it builds oil pressure before starting it after an oil change). However, since it got "cold" the gauges had started to do their sweep a second time as I cranked the engine. This suggested to me that the battery was dropping so low that the gauges thought they were off. :o

Solution, new red top Optima from Walmart. :P

They have 2 different group 35 batteries. One has the option to have posts on both the top, or the side but the +/- are reversed from what the Subaru needs. The other, fits like a glove. The wife even helped me swap it, not that she undid anything, or lifted anything but a second set of hands to wrangle cables is "handy".

So, the plan for next auto-x season is a Braille battery (or Deka, or other equivalent).

Winterization already done:
  • winter wheels/tires on
  • heavy duty battery in

Winterization to be done:
  • Coilovers removed, stock suspension on
  • Block heater extension cord, scraper and shovel in trunk
  • winter rubber floor mats
  • rallyarmor undertray on
  • foglights uncovered

Why do you run the foglights uncovered in the winter? It seems to me, I'd do the opposite? To avoid getting a rock in them (stupid gravel)

Is it due the wanting them on for better visibility in heavy snow?
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

Exactly, I prefer them covered & sleek looking in the summer.  But in the winter it's dark more so I want the fogs.

(As for protection, I have the yellow rockblocker on them and I'm sure it's contributed to their long survival).

I was reading your build and you said you have 245-40-R17, did you have any rubbing issues with that size?

other then the camber bolt :)

think I can get away with that size on a stock suspension 06 STi?

also, did you ever get a chance to try those star specs?

Nope. I didn't have any rubbing.  Wally also ran 245/45R17 (which is taller than stock, as well as being wide & I don't think he had any rubbing either).

I think they should fit just fine with a stock suspension.

I didn't drive on any Dunlop Z1 *-specs, but some people locally are competing on them so I got to see how they worked in our envinronment/temp/venue.

Suffice it to say they're still on my short list for next year depending on what information SCCA forums, southern US events and new items coming on the market.

So, the plan for next auto-x season is a Braille battery (or Deka, or other equivalent).

Options:
  • Braille B106C  6.6 lbs 210 CCA (carbon fibre)
  • Braille B106 6.6 lbs 210 CCA (without cf)
  • Deka ETX9 - 6.3 lbs - 120 CCA (supposedly the same as Braille B106 w/o the name)
  • Braille B129 9.5lbs 323 CCA (without cf)
  • Deka ETX12 - 9.4 lbs - 180 CCA (supposedly the same as Braille B129 w/o the name)
  • Braille B14115C 11.5 lbs 360 CCA (carbon fibre)
  • Braille B14115 11.5 lbs 360 CCA (without cf)
  • Deka ETX14 ~12lbs 200 CCA (supposedly the same as Braille B14115 w/o the name)
  • Odyssey PC680 15.4 lbs 220 CCA (has a metal jacket)

Supposedly Deka makes the batteries for Braille and based on what i've seen they look 100% identical...  So Deka's ratings are likely more accurate, unless glueing a CF skin to it increases the CCA. ;)

Now I just have it figure out from where. Can you even order a battery online or will it have to be the hell of finding someplace local?

So, I guess I might as well swap back to my stock struts any time now. :-\  My only reason for dragging it out so long is now cancelled.

Last year there was one on Oct. 19... but I guess there wasn't enough interest this year.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/grant_subaru/sets/72157608145662196/

Pic of Kueda in pits (this same day last year).

Darn weather making people nervous.  People should've registered *hoping* for good weather, it's not like SpeedWay Performance were bad to deal with, or like there was any hassle for refunds...  I just got my refund out've the blue, the full amount...

ToDo for next years auto-x:
  • new tires
  • lightweight battery
  • new (kartboy) endlinks

I had an Odyssey in my Lancer and had no issues ordering online. I believe Buschur or AMS makes a kit for the smaller battery.

14.6 BRAKES
...
E: STX and STU: Non-standard brake rotors may be used provided
they are of equal or larger dimensions (diameter and thickness)
and made of ferrous material (e.g. iron). Aluminum rotor hats
are allowed.
Cars originally equipped with solid (non-vented)
rotors may utilize vented rotors. Cross-drilled and/or slotted
brake rotors may be fitted provided all such voids are within the
disc area, and comprise no more than 10% of that area. Brake
calipers and mounting brackets may be replaced provided they
bolt to the standard locations and the number of pistons is equal
to or greater than standard. ... Changes to
backing plates/dust shields/brake lines to accommodate these
changes are permitted but may serve no other purpose.

So what are your plans?  Are you planning for same diameter, but lighter material (Thus lowering unsprung weight) or are you going for bigger brake surface to dissipate more heat? (At the expense of more rotational mass, Further out from center over stock).

I've already gone larger + vented  in the rear (via the 2-pot rear upgrade).

But this, specifically, is for the aluminium hat 2-piece front rotors I just received. ;)  (So thicker + lighter)

Pics to come once I'm home. ;)

They're one of the weird things (along with BBK) that are allowed in STX/STU, but not in *SP.

This is wrong, I re-read the rules and it's now allowed in both ST & SP.

Ah that makes sense, cause I was looking through the rules for rotors and the SP rules said no to 2-piece rotors.
When are you installing?

After a season of auto-x I ended up 3rd in the Street Touring category (ST, STS, STX, STU combined).

And at the Year End Dinner I recieved the "ASA Cup" (placeholder as the trophies weren't ready).

(See, this is why I'm usually *behind* the camera, this was the only shot Any took where it didn't look like a blurry frame from a sasquatch or UFO film.)

Rei (Shinobi555) came in first in SP-Street Tire (ahead of a certain wagon owner)

And a Subaru owner who's modded his 04 STI into being a "summer car" (markus) showed up properly attired:
