Holiday ideas/California
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:10:40 pm »
I'm going to go down to California next month and wanted to get some ideas of cool stuff to check out while down there.

If anyone has been, what'd you like, what sucked, and what do you wish you did do?

If driving, take the PCH.

Santa Monica is also a very cool place. There's an area sort of near the pier there (kind of southeast-ish of it) that has a Whyte Ave kind of area that's blocked off to car traffic. A bunch of one-of-a-kind shops on it, cool atmosphere and some "unique" buskers.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

+1 to Santa Monica. My sister lives in the area and I spent an afternoon on 'the strip' you mentioned. The pier is pretty awesome...

Here's a pic of my sis and mom:
(you can see the pier in the background)

Google is right there, and there's a mean fish and chip place too!

I just went to Cupertino, CA for training.. very warm (5-22C daily), sunny all the time..

Good eats, good places to go (Frys, Apple HQ, Google HQ, Sun Microsystems HQ, Tesla HQ), and all general awesomeness.  Lots of ethnic cuisine there too.

Wife made me take pics of everything I ate, so here's some pics of food and other stuff..

Sam's Chowder House in Halfmoon Bay was good for their lobster roll ($20 bucks US!), but chowder at Barbara's was better.
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

I strongly recommend San Fran. I have been 6 times now. It is my favourite city. I have also been to LA and Palm Springs, but I think San Fran is the most beautiful and so interesting. It has so much history and cool things to see and do.

Alcatraz, Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf, Steep windy hills, Golden Gate, Marin County near by, UC-Berkeley, great downtown, trolley tours etc...

I was just there on the weekend actually to watch the UBC - Cal rugby games that I used to play in.

Seconded. Where else can you climb around in a WW2 submarine for $5??!? Plus the freighter next door was cool. They were running the engines the day we were there. Imagine conrods 15 feet tall!!!

Ripleys, the Aquarium, Rainforest Cafe... the sea lions... Exploratorium... Zoo... the fort... giant forests... ferries across the bay...

I've been out on that Santa Monica pier at night. A buddy and I were walking around, realized at one point there was a bunch of kids (like 20+) walking around all had the exact same color of bandana on for some reason... nobody hassled us fortunately.

Big Sur!!!

San Francisco Aquarium is a must if you've never been. go there.

Half Moon Bay, about an hour south of SF. They have (had) a bar with 4" of peanut shells on the floor of the bar, and shark-bitten surfboards on the wall.

Bring your Bible though. lol
