To those of you who own/import JDM Subies...

If it has a turbo, you WILL need engine management for your subie.

Quote from: "ECS Performance"
As for the 91 octane, you will want to run 93 to run it on the stock ecu. If you cannot get 93 octane, then you will want to use engine management.

Now, ECS sells the Haltech E8 with base maps on them for the Ver 1-6 JDM WRX/STis and there's a company called Greenline in Japan that sells the Ver3-6 Apexi PowerFC (Standalone) at a reasonable rate of $815 shipped and the ver1-2 at the ridiculous price of $1,350.00 shipped.

Hydra does have a plug & play model for the ver 3-6 which you can get from Phil from Element Tuning.  Phil has amazing customer support and will go the distance to make sure his customers are satisfied.

Autronic makes standalones that are plug&play for the Ver 3 - Ver 6 as well.  They are a little more expensive than the rest, but are apparently one of the best standalone units out there.  If you don't believe me, feel free to ask Patr or LightSPD.  Both carry the Autronic units.

Quote from: "patr"
cars powered by Autronic ECUs have won more rallies in the US than any other brand in the last few years... Hyundai factory team, Subaru factory team (Canada and some of the USA cars), etc. etc.

cars powered by Autronic ECUs have won countless international rallies as well...

Its the best value in a PnP for the wrx, and I've tried *and* tuned them all (GEMS, Motec, Link, etc. etc.)... enough said

The pricing scale, from cheapest to most expensive, goes like this:
- Apexi PowerFC
- Haltech E8
- Hydra
- Autronic

Beware Hydra and cold starts.  Cold starts are a PITA to tune for as you get one shot per day to get it right.

You aren't mistaken; this post was solid gold.

A nice development I've found on the PFC:

The guy is developing a cheaper alternative to DataLogit which should be ready within the next couple of months.

What are the prices like on these units?  As you know, I'll be looking to get into one as soon as I can afford to once I finish my swap.

I was thinking about selling my car and buying a jdm wrx but my car is only a weekend driver during the school months...is there another alternative to higher octane levels? I just want something else until i have enough money to afford some form of engine management...

Not really any alternative to the higher octane levels.  You *could* try Husky 94 but I was advised against doing so by many JDM-swapped GC guys.

Sorry to bump an old thread but if you have a few hours, a little patience, and some soldering skill there is another option available.

A standalone (some assembly required) with a ton of options that is used for various different applications for $450 USD.  You're looking at probably close to $600 when all is said and done which is dirt cheap for a standalone for you JDM guys.

It's essentially the same unit as a megasquirt but it now works for Subaru and you have to assemble it yourself.  You assemble it into a plug&play unit.

Features:
Quote
•OEM ECU Connector to plug right into the factory harness!
•Speed Density, Alpha-N and Hybrid Alpha-N (both SD and A-N algorithms hybridized) Supported•2 Ignition Inputs (for dual wheel ignitions)
•4 Spark Outputs (Up to 4 Cylinder Coil On Plug, up to 8 Cylinder Wasted Spark)
•Rotary Ignition Support
•Enhanced Acceleration Enrichment (EAE)
•Boost Control
•Knock Control
•Launch Control
•Flat Shift
•Tachometer Output
•Fully Adjustable Rev Limiter
•Table Switching
•4 General PurposeOutputs
•4 General Purpose Inputs  (2 analog, 2 digital)
•Support for Flex Fuel
•Optional Realtime Baro Correction
•Closed Loop O2 Correction
•Plenty of Proto Area, add your own customizations!
