2.0L, TD04, PnP, Meth, on Husky 90
« on: March 17, 2009, 03:17:26 pm »
I've been playing with Husky 90 for the last little while and thought I would post up some results.

Relevent Info

'04 WRX
Stock 2.0L
PnP OEM headers, uppipe, IC elbows, throttle body, TD04
TGV delete
Phenolic spacers
Gutted stock uppipe
Prodrive silicone y-pipe
Perrin turbo inlet
Resonator removed (used for meth tank)
Stock airbox w/ stock filter drawing from fenderwell
Hybrid GMBCS/MBC
Aquamist 2D+DDS3 water/meth injection @ 50/50 by weight
ERZ catless downpipe
Borla Hush twin tip CBE

Everything PnP, installed, and tuned by me.

Dyno - This was produced using Sunny's (Airboy) spreadsheet.

This time I went to Sunny's Super Secret Test Track so that there could be a direct comparison with what he posts for his tunes.

Bear in mind that these runs were done at 19 PSI instead of my usual 22+ PSI due to a slipping clutch. Having the hybrid GMBCS/MBC makes it easy to dial down the boost if needed.

The lighter colored lines are the results I achieved at my own test track in the south end of the city, taken about 1/2 hr after the "SSSTT" runs. As you can see my track results in slightly higher (~ +10) peak HP and TQ numbers.

The darker lines are the average of two runs in opposite directions at "SSSTT"

Ambient temp was -6*

And for reference the last pull I was able to make without the clutch slipping at my test track @ 22PSI

Remember to subtract ~ 10HP/TQ to match Sunny's plots.

Ambient temp was -5*

I think I'm done playing with the tune until I get a chance to install the VF43 and supporting mods sometime in the summer.

Stay "tuned" for those results.  ;D

Damn, I hate looking at your numbers.  :P

You truly have a 2.0L torque monster!  Awesome job.

That's insane Jeff, and one of the reasons I'm doing everything I can to stay within the stock tdo4 limits/world myself.

*I can't believe you are thinking of going to the dark side... and by that I mean the STi side... or turbo side of it anyway! ;)

Great work!

That's the kind of hate I can take.  ;D Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks Stuart. Hopefully I can get as much out of it as you do.

Again thanks for the kudos. There is lots in these little turbos, just nobody gives them a chance.

I can't believe it either! I'm still not completely sold on bigger turbos, but I'll never know unless I try it. There's a good possibility I'll go back to the stocker. Time will tell.

Jeff
How much did you have to throttle back on the timing up top, with the lower Octane?

Resistance is futile...first a VF43...then a 2.5L block... ;)  Or just go straight to a 2010/11 STi :D

Gain 50 ft-lbs, ask me how! :-)

It's been a number of iterations, I don't have time to look at it tonight but I'll try to post up some data tomorrow. Running this well on H90 makes me think I was leaving something on the table with H94, but I could never get anything more out of it.

As for the Borg ... I'm doing a trial run with the VF43, as I said before I'm not convinced but I have to try it. But the 2.5L, again as I've said many times on this board I would love to have it, and the more I really understood the difference it could make the more I kicked myself for not ponying up the extra money for an '06+. Live and learn I guess.

I'm really not trying to blow up the 2.0L, honest.  ;)

I dropped about 1.5* at peak torque and similar timing at the top end (~27*), but I added some fuel as well.

I'm in! Let's see ... 2 people buying should be worth at least 90% off.

Count me in for a 2.5L block!  A third should make it completely free right?  ;)

I'll take the 4th...technically I guess I'll get paid to take it if the 3rd is free haha

Why are you using the hybrid boost control setup instead of just a mbc or the gmbcs?

Shane, you have a problem dude!  ;)

Either way, Jeff's post is an inspiration to all of us 2.0L TD04 owners.   :o

Why are you using the hybrid boost control setup instead of just a mbc or the gmbcs?

The hybrid method gives you control of boost in non-WOT situations with the GMBCS, and the MBC ensures that you have no boost spikes.  It is basically a clamp that will not allow boost to go any higher than you want in any situation. This way I can tune for great spool in the lower gears and not have to worry about spiking in the taller gears.

ride5000 on NASIOC was the originator, you can see his post here. The cockpit adjustability is nice. I don't use it often, but in circumstances like my clutch slipping I can just reach under the dash and crank down the boost. A half turn roughly translates into a pound of boost.

I was forced to use an MBC last fall due to damaging the ECU when I wasn't paying attention. I was re-hooking up the DDS3 and blew the controller for the BCS. With the new ECU in place I decided to go hybrid.

I also like paying $0.15 less a liter for fuel, saving almost $9.00 a fill. An extra $450 a year for mods!
