Tranny Down
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:21:33 pm »
So I was driving my car nice for once and put the car into second and it felt a little tight. I let out the clutch and grinding occurred. After that it will not engage into 2nd anymore. So is this a gear issue or shift fork or something else? I looked at the linkage all seems fine.

Now the next question what tranny's will bolt into a 93 JDM WRX? From what I know it has a 3.9 ratio in the rear diff so I'll need a trans with the same. I heard the 05 USDM STI's had a 3.9 ratio and that it will bolt up to the car with a STI trans mount, 95ish Impreza L Auto Driveshaft, and the STI clutch flywheel and pressure plate and linkage. For now though what 5 speeds can I use. I have stubs on the trans and the pin style clutch fork as well.

Could be the second synchro. I am gonna pull it soon and have a look. I may just buy a replacement and then build this one up over this coming winter.

Just a side question for you:

When you're pulling out the transmission: are you using a Tranny jack?  or will those Transmission adapters that go onto Regular floor jacks work all the same?

I have a tranny Jack. The crappy thing is that I just did my clutch 3 weeks ago lol yay. Oh well I can have the trans out in 2 hours using my hoist ;D.

So update. I pulled the transmission and cracked open the case. near the center diff I found the end of my 1-2 shift fork yay. She snapped clean off. I am in the process of figuring out which fork I have and what its part number is. I have been searching for 2 weeks now and no one can tell me what the OEM piece's number is yay. So if anyone knows what part number it is or if other North American cars had the same shift fork in the 5MT then please let me know.

On another note our Tranny's are a 4.111 FD not a 3.9 like I stated above.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance when it comes to MT... but I'm guessing this won't help.

Is this from a JDM 5MT from around 93? If so this may help. Now excuse my ignorance but which is the 1-2 selector fork lol????

Okay so 32804 is the 1-2 selector fork. Now there are 3 part numbers to that fork a mark 1, standard, and mark 3. What this means is you have to measure tolerances between 1st and 2nd gear. Standard is if the tolerances are in stock specs. If the tolerances are out either towards 1st or towards 2nd you need mark 1 for towards 1st and mark 3 for towards 2nd. All in all I am going to assume that the standard will work for me.

Wow, it actually worked?  haha

I got that from the subaru parts software, from a 93 wrx.  Only fork parts that came up under search.
Maybe give it a try for yourself to confirm.   http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=7336.0
