NEED HELP ASAP!...coilpack converstion questions
« on: July 20, 2009, 01:30:13 am »
okay so im in the middle of my conversion...and i have come to a bump in the road...so i took the packs out of my jdm, the colors of the wires to the pack from the connector were, thick red with thin yellow strip, and yellow with green strip! now i need to know what one is 12v and what one is trigger!??...furthermore i need to know what type of epoxi to get??...i picked up this "dielectric tune up grease" oem approved , made for high heat, however thinking now, grease and epoxi will serve two differnt purposes, so any suggestions on the epoxi....(hopefully brand specific)??....i searched for a high heat, non conducting, epoxi, and walked out with high heat nonconducting tune up grease...subconscience stupidity!...anyway some advice would be greatly appreciated, happy subaruing!...one more thing...i have seen the conversion thread, but it is slightly different, hense the questions!...

For one don't use the grease. Expoy high temp is the best but 5min will work too. Also DON'T epoxy it till you have triple checked that the wires are good and soldered and the right way.

Yellows are your triggers from the coilpack to the connector. On the ECU side of the harness to the connector yellow is the 12v lol weird that they did that. Just go with yellow as trigger and it will be fine.

I couldn't find high temp epoxy either so I just used 5 minute epoxy and it's been good.

I searched high and low for high temp, but ended up using the 5 minute epoxy and letting it sit over night.

It's for sure worth doing. But I wouldn't worry about doing it until your current coils fail.

90% of the JDMs need the conversion.  Do it and get it over with so you can cross that one off of the to do list.

You will know. When you hit higher boost the car may stumble hesitate or just feel not as strong. Pull them out and inspect them. If you do this make sure you remove the rubber boot from the bottom of the coils and inspect the plastic as well. This is where the coil will most likely have failed.

just pull them and inspect I would almost guaranty you'll find some cracking under the boots.

what i found out about my coilpacks is they looked amazing when i pulled them out but they have a heat life cycle and get very brittle! when pulling off my boot to inspect them they were so brittle they just fell apart...EVERY JDM GC8 NEEDS THIS CONVERSION!!!! it did wonders...i didnt have any major slugginsh behavior, my issue was misfires at low rpm...with the conversion...not anymore!...worth every dime and second!...just take your time soldering!...not to mension noticed a bit better mileage as well!

happy subaruing!

U need 02+ and for a wrx... And ya this conversion is eventually needed by all jdm's and it will make you smile afterwards! Haha there are some threads on nasioc that post websites to order sets for a pretty good price! I pulled mine off a written off wrx cause I didn't wan to wait lol and it was cheaper cause they were used! But worked just as well! Oh and of you go get used ones.. Cut off as much or the pigtails on the coilpack as possible!

Happy subaruing!
