Supertones Install
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:37:47 am »
I ended up installing my Supertones last night (sorry, no pics...but it's a super easy install).  It took me about an hour to do.  I had to fiddle around with the location and ended up stacking some washers and using the holes on the rad mount to mount the horns.  I used this diagram that I found on NABISCO with one minor mod.  The silver node on the the horn is (-) and goes to the ground and the copper node is (+) and goes to the relay.  I know that some people say the polarity doesn't really matter but I wanted to get it right the first time.  ;)  All in all this install ended up being pretty fun and loud!  When I pulled into my parkade at the office this morning, I had to let a small blast off in the stall and man was it loud!  :D

So your stock horns still work in conjunction with your Supertones?

My car originally had 3 horns.  One located on the passenger side strut for the OEM alarm.  One in the middle column of the rad support and the last one in the front driverside of the grille.

I ended up disconnecting the front middle one for the install and actually removed it all together.  The horn on the driver side still works, but in all reality is drowned out by the Supertones.  As for the alarm one, it is wired up with my Commandstart alarm horn for extra notification!  ;)

Nice. Yeah, mine are mounted but i haven't wired them yet. I still want to mount a switch to go between the original horns and the supertones. One day... when i have time... and a belief that i wont burn down my car.
Go home Subaru. You're drunk.

That should be easy enough.  I would put the kill switch on the wire from 87 on the relay.  All you should require is a single pole toggle switch or something similar.

I was going to put a switch on mine as well, for the occasional road runner *meep meep* when I don't need the full 118dB.
But that can be added on later at any time, so I just hooked them up in parallel.
I guess if your gonna beep good bye, you want to really BEEP goodbye.

nice work on the red nose :) People ask me all the time 'what are those red things', as I move to the side and set my car alarm off... ... while we're on the opposite end of a parking lot. :D I lov'em. They are especially nice when driving at night in the mountains. I'll just hold the horn if I see sparkly things in the distance (usually dear eyes...)

a tap on the horn gives a nice 'bing', just a 'bing'... it will wake most people up. It's like hitting an oil drum with a rock styled 'bing'.

I rarely use my horn. Though I was once coming back facing the front of my car when my alarm was going off. y0wza. I prefer being behind the wheel where it sounds 100% different. It's scary how deafening it is.

For reference:
- The hella vs stock subaru/denso relay provides no benefit (except running them [stock+hella] in parallel). I metered all 4 scenarios and came up with the same result. [thus the hellas work just fine when they replace the stock horns, you just need to run a seperate ground]. woo.
- Coloured is always (+), silver is always (-) and green is always ground.
- The bolt holes in the center of the rad are not level. That's a optical pisser. :)
entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity

Snapped a pic while I was outside earlier.  I'm glad I didn't use the centre area to mount these, I think they would have looked off.  :D

You don't approve of the vampire clips?

Thanks!

I dont approve of any type of quick connect.

I solder absolutely everything except deck installs.  Including speakers, horns, amp wiring, ect.  But thats why visions also charges more, and part of the reason I left futureshop.

You should paint those suckers WRB ;)

I would have soldered everything but I don't have much of my electronics tools right now because most of my stuff is in storage waiting for the new house.  :(  Everything works fine now, but if the wiring fails, I'll just rewire the entire thing.  Shouldn't take more than 30 mins.

I was thinking about that but I kinda like the red right now.  Might get sick of it eventually so I was thinking of painting them black...a little more stealth.

They're so easy to paint too.  Vampire clips work, but they're very susceptible to corrosion.

LOL.  For you, I should take them apart and solder them properly.

Soldering would be nice, but it was a frustrating enough experience for mine.

Butt connectors, electrical tape, and heat shrink.
Sealed good enough for my limited skills.

I found some vampire clips at Princess Auto.  I have also seen them at The Source.

I have used vampire clips before, but they fell apart in my experience.
Butt connectors are just like you said prelude. 2 wires in one end, 1 wire out the other. Crimp both ends.
Then like i said, electrical tape the whole thing, and heat shrink, keeps it waterproof.

Are there not holes in the center support? Take the stock horn (which you can see in the pic, lower right side of the center grill) and loosen the screw, angle it down (if your mounting in parallel? Otherwise, if you're just replacing, then remove it).
Then put the hella's above (provided there are holes, there were on mine) so that they come through the center grill.
Shouldn't be any problems if you were to drill new holes either (just shlack a bunch of rustproof spray on it after drilling)

Looks good in the pic, but above is just another suggestion.

There are support holes to installed them in the center grill.
