Tell me about rad caps
« on: May 13, 2015, 10:50:10 am »
NASIOC is a itshay-show for rad-cap info, mainly devolving into ricer "it's pink so it is good" type threads (and my google foo is weak).

I have an aftermarket rad in the rally astardbay WRX/STi. The cap on the radiator says 1.1bar and is so old the sticker is completely faded... which is probably why the rubber gasket disintegrated on it and caused my massive coolant issues at Cochrane!

I tried the rad cap on the coolant reservoir on the radiator and it "fits", but does that mean it actually "fits"? I don't think I need the 15psi/1.1bar rad cap, and it probably overtaxes the cooling system more than necessary. I am simply hoping to run two coolant reservoir caps and call it a day.

Does WSC see this as a worthy solution? The Subaru Edmonton parts lady says in her system that there is only a reservoir cap, which may be the case for factory rad WRXs in 2002/2003, I am unsure. She also says when she takes the VIN filter off, the same rad cap comes up for both rad and reservoir.

I want to buy oem rad caps as my thinking is that for the $20 each they should be of a much higher quality than what I get at Canadian Tire. Dunno if that is faulty logic or not?

The OEM ones are 1bar, and the "SPT" ones are 1.3bar.
I don't think that the reservoir one is any different from the rad one in terms of pressure, as it wouldn't make much sense since the entire system is ideally under the same amount of pressure.

I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

The ECFT needs to have a lower pressure rating than the radiator cap so system pressure will equalize. As your system sits right now, you're sending coolant to the overflow prematurely

Meh.

Jealous of the amount you put into your car?

I was going to post a pic of my 03 showing the two different caps and their pressure ratings... Don't have to go outside anymore! :)
