WRX 08\09\265 upgrade paths
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:27:21 am »
Welcome everyone,

This thread is designed to help all the people with 08\09\265s and upgrade paths. THIS IS NOT AN STI PATH
I have an 08 and have done lots of research, there is lots of opinions and knowledge in these posts.
This is my first time writing something this big, so please flame with caution :)

This thread may help you mod with purpose, or give you an idea of what path to take.
A lot of the upgrades on this path will REQUIRE you to get a tune, by any means you choose.

#1 mod with purpose, give yourself a goal, it could be HP, it could be the boxer rumble, it could be a blow off valve, it could be audio, it could be exterior, it could be auto cross the point is to set a path.

#2 ask questions, there are many people on this board that have done some of these upgrades.

#3 dont be afraid to ask for help, if you don't know ask! take your flames and n00bie questions with pride, you are on a learning experience and dont be afraid!

Upgrade options 08 WRX

These mods are designed as simple upgrades, they are by no means the ONLY options:

TURBO UPGRADE, with support mod options.

Turbo: VF-52 from the 265
TMIC: STI TMIC or an aftermarket one, Perrin for example.
(with this upgrade you don't have to change fuel pumps and injectors or the TMIC)

You can go bigger turbos. They will require other options. Here is a small list of upgrades and turbo options:
Turbo: 20G
Fuel pump: Walbro
Injectors: 750cc (unconfirmed)
FMIC or TMIC (easy TMIC, harder FMIC) Mixed emotions on this, if you go FMIC you get more attention and a little more aggression from other tuners.

Stage Upgrade Definitions:

Stage 1 : ECU Tuning
Stage 2 : ECU Tuning + Downpipe/TBE
Stage 3 : ECU Tuning + Downpipe/TBE + TMIC Upgrade
Stage 4 : ECU Tuning + Downpipe/TBE + TMIC Upgrade + Turbo Swap

You will see these "Stages" commonly used when referring to levels of modification on our vehicles. Be aware that proper tuning MUST be done when most modifications (excluding suspension upgrades) are performed.

ECU Tuning Options:

Open Source Tuning - Commonly performed by vehicle owners or via specialized tuners in the area (Airboy)
PM Airboy for pricing and availability

Cobb Accessport Tuning - A device used to quickly change the ECU maps in a vehicle. Comes preloaded with stock, stage 1 and stage 2 maps.
www.cobbtuning.com

Professional Shop Tuning - Tuning usually done via a dyno at a professional shop. Often considered the "Best" type of tune, as it simulates real driving conditions while the car is modified. (Although Airboy tunes do this as well).
www.rocketrally.com www.lightspeedinnovations.com

Standalone ECU's - Often used in heavily modified or race applications, this method completely replaces the on-board ECU with a standalone unit capable of map switching / modification on the fly. This is the most expensive and in-depth method of ECU tuning.

Can we list what Engines each model has?

People talk about EJ251,255 etc etc.  I have no clue what engine i have in my car? is there a way to find out?

***edit***

Oh, a bit of reading on google and i think you can Figure out what engine you have based off simple info.

EJ255 is probably my engine?
EJ = 4 cyl
25 = Displacement (2.5L)
5 = Turbo'd Engine (3 for Non-turbo).

This info was listed for the 08's though - i am still looking for specific 09 info.

Yes he is crazy hehe....

The question is, is it better\safer to have the fuel pump and injectors on the HTA68 just for that wiggle room.

the HTA68 price wise is a little higher than the 20G from my research, and holds the PSI, where as the 20G is an instant OOMPH of power?

What is the difference from 20G to FP 20G? or is it just the name?
Sorry for the questions, still reading on turbo stuff.

Please check here, i would like to add your information from your upgrade path into it.

Instead of cluttering Cyni's thread, I thought it would be more appropriate to continue the discussion here.

On the stock injectors, WITH meth, Sunny's car on the HTA68 is running out of injector, and that is at our elevation.  At sea level, he probably would need injectors.  If you are planning to use straight pump gas, then maybe the stock injectors won't be enough.

"OOOMPH" of power is a pretty subjective description.  If you mean "OOOMPH" = torque, then the HTA68 will probably have more at a lower rpm than the 20G.  The 20G should flow more air than the HTA68 at higher rpms.

FP = Forced Performance, a company that makes Subaru application turbos, including the HTA68.

Xrayvsn, yes this information was going to be added to the upgrade path.
Once i figure out a little more and understand it.

Seems like a very simple upgrade with little hassles.
