How-to: Mount bluetooth mic in factory housing
« on: February 24, 2013, 05:44:57 pm »
I used an Alpine bluetooth mic for this project but I imagine most aftermarket mics are built the same:

First, here's what we're working with...the stock maplight and sunroof control housing an the Alpine BT mic

Disassemble the maplight console:

BT mic needs to come apart, basically you're separating the front trim from the rest of the mic so it can mount on the exterior of the pod:

Bust out your dremel and grind off the ridge on the corner:

and then cut out the appropriate sized hole:

I opted to paint the entire housing along with the BT mic cover.  You can paint the BT mic to match instead but I'm recovering my headliner in a dark gray material so this made the most sense:

Reassemble the BT Mic, switches and lights (I've since swapped the bulbs for LED's):

Old vs. new:

Your maplight housing looks much much different than mine.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

Because of the sunroof controls.

oh wow this is awesome, how is the clarity of the microphone from this location? mine's clipped to the top left corner of the windshield on the headliner and i have to speak pretty loud or shout to get clear sound to the other line. doesnt help my car vibrates and is louder inside the cabin than stock.

I honestly haven't tested it yet, my car is apart for a full build.  I looked at a lot of factory bluetooth installs and most manufacturers use that same location.  I will post a report when the car is back on the road
