2011 Forester XT Oil Filter Relocation?
« on: February 18, 2017, 01:02:08 pm »
I went ahead and bought one of these:

http://derale.com/products/filtration/engine2013-10-28-09-53-27459934969/relocation-kits/1-pass-15-heat-sink-transmission-cooler-kit-detail.

Has any one installed one of these?. If so, where did you put it?. I have my thoughts on where it can go but just looking for prior experience and assistance.

Thanks.
David.

Curious why anyone would consider it.. the filter is in a very convenient location already. Right beside the drain.

I'm guessing it's because of the ring of fire around it. Idk where would be better though

I've been considering doing it for a long time. With my ez drain valve on the pan the filter is the only thing that makes the oil change a mess because it is bottom mounted around the headers. On the new FA engines they are top mounted in the engine bay. With that setup you wouldn't even need a drip tray to do your oil change and it could be easily done anywhere anytime completely cleanly even without access to a garage.

Fair enough. Though I feel that Subarus (EJ specifically, and I've owned almost every configuration) are one of the easiest cars to change oil. Filter mever makes a mess and a standard sized tray catches both filter and drain at once. I never understood the quick drain valves either, I dont trust them for the total 20 seconds they'd save. To each his own though!

Being that it's in the ring of fire... Where are you going to run the hoses?

Precisely. Seems like a make work project to me, especially considering the 'gains'. I had a hard enough time routing an oil temp sensor cable outta there!

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, the dudes who put them on their trans baffle me even more.

Once I got oil down my arm into my uckfaying armpit doing a quick change on a hoist, I went back to my Fumoto valve... It's like how a girl pees versus how a guy pees. Which would you rather?

To each his own though ;)

There's a couple of advantages to the valve. Much cleaner and controlled drainage of oil, and if overfilling occurs, it is very easy to correct. Ball valves are also very reliable...or so I hear. I personally have never had a leak from mine.

Because I never buy filters from the dealer, getting the right sized gasket for the drain plug is a bit of a pain. For me, there's enough advantages and trust that I would recommend it to anyone. But that's just me
