H6 EZ36D Build - sourcing parts
« on: September 20, 2017, 09:22:45 am »
Anyone have experience with these motors and/or swaps? I've heard it's a relatively easy swap into other chassis, notably that they match up direct to 5/6speeds and only minor modification of subframe and radiator mounting is needed.

The idea is that in rally, our Open class rules require N/A builds to be 4.0 liters of displacement or less, but we can run any fuel, any compression ratio we want. I see this as a simpler (yet more expensive) option than going turbo, which would lead to more parts that could fail. Often see teams struggle with boost leaks, turbo problems or tune related issues from dramatic changes in altitude from event to event.

The outstanding questions are along the lines of sourcing parts
Where to get a block / donor? Since these were somewhat rare or undersold car/motor combination
Are there any aftermarket pistons/rods/sleeves etc available if I wanted to do a build rather than just a drop-in swap.

Awe sweet!  Cheap Porsche noise!  I am excited for this!

I think the only thing you really need to do is move the radiator forward.  I did a lot of reading for this a long time ago because but I can't remember most of it now.  :(  Besides, you've probably read up on everything I did anyway.

Are they that rare?  There's no Outback or Tribeca around?

To keep things in budget, I wouldn't build the motor.  It's plenty strong as is and you're not going to boost it.

What are your options for running it?  Haltech?

I'll do a haltech or Link, needs dual AVCS control which I think both of those can do.

They didn't sell very many Tribeca or 3.6R's I don't think, so I'm keeping my eyes open for salvaged or cheaper ones.
Motor build wouldnt' be for strength, it would be for power. We can run 4.0 non boosted, so I can do a bore/stroke to get closer to 4.0, and run higher compression pistons on E85 or 103, and with the AVCS have really aggressive valve maps and timing. That's the theory anyway.

250 HP/TQ NA is nice, but 350 is better :)

Radiator needs to be a stock one that has dual outlets, and moved forward a bit yeah, as far as I've heard.

Yikes, I see.  Well...  Generally speaking, boost is cheaper than an NA build?  But whatever path you take, I will back you up with full moral support.

Well I re-read the rules and even Open 4wd is limited to 2.5L N/A. Getting confirmation on those rules, as it doesn't make sense that open two-wheel drive can go 4L NA but not 4WD

wah wah. If this is the case, can you go high comp standalone dual AVCS heads on a 2.5 n/a? I think you can make a decent amount of torque out of these, especially if you spend the $$ on porting/flow testing heads.

Wouldn't that be a lot more expensive than just going 2.5 l or 2.0 l turbo?

If that's the case and I can't run a EZ36D, I'll just wait until this car dies and run a different one as turbo

Depending on what I hear back from CARS' tech people, I might put an official petition in to allow the H6 3.0, 3.3 and 3.6 as motors in the series for Open class >:)

Tom Penner @ Techworks Engineering says he builds a lot of higher power N/A blocks for open class rally. His shop is in Calgary. I'd go visit him and have a quick chat.

Tom built the engine that's in my car right now, so I'll definitely be giving him a call to talk about this if I need.

A hopped up H6 would be super cool.

If it doesn't need C16 I'll be disappointed.

That sounds expensive, if I can get a reasonable power increasing from 94 to 103 I might consider it, probably no higher than that.

Find me 15:1 pistons for a EZ36 and I'll do it :D Something tells me there isn't a huge aftermarket for these.
