Hahaha I didn't think there would be that much of a difference in feel. Once you get coilovers youll notice it will feel so much better, honestly feels like a totally different car. Probably one of the best bang for the buck mods on a gc8

In with the new (grimmspeed uppipe):

Out with the old (OEM with no heat shield):

And none too soon, the fumes from this broken pos was making me light headed while driving. So far it sounds a little throatier and the turbo spools up a little quicker, NICE.

A while back while changing my struts I nicked one of my brake lines with a wire cutter. It was just a small touch and not really much damage (no leaks) but in the back of my mind I've never trusted it, so when rallysportdirect was offering a black-Friday sale I bought these new steel braided lines:

I've replaced brake lines many time in the past and this was by far the easiest one yet (just clipped right in) which was nice.

That said, uckfay I hate bleeding brakes... I really, really hate bleeding brakes...

ALKs are a good choice. Kinda curious how they feel on the GC, it made my 06 wagon a lot better.

It slaughters your classing but man is it worth it.

I did that around the same time I did the sways and wow what a difference, easily the biggest bang for the buck on these cars. Admittedly though it did take a awhile to get everything dialed in just right (struts, sways adjustments).

Hopefully if we have any kind of autoslalom next year (fingers crossed) I'll have to figure out my class again and get faster.

Just bring the Porsche out and then let me co-drive because I no longer have an autocross car.

Although I put this on my car awhile ago I never posted it up here. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it on, however yesterday it saved my oil pan (you probably can't see the scrap on this ittshay pic). It doesn't cover everything the OEM gaurd does and sometimes water splashs on the manifold, but it was worth every penny!

So anyone else own a Type R with a 180 diff? If you do then good luck to you if the rear brakes go.

Recently one of my rear calipers seized, nearly caught fire which then destroyed the pads, rotor, brake line, and caliper. To find a replacement its been a few days of searching and reading because "some" Type R's had 180 diffs (yay!). Basically if you have a 180 diff, you'll need a 290mmX10mm rotor with a 190mm parking brake to work with your 1 pot floating caliper and guess what, these do not exist in north america... to fix it I had to get creative and get a little upgrady:

1. Set of 06 WRX 2 pot calipers (rebuilds, so no red paint, but they match the fronts :) )
2. Set of 06 WRX brake lines
3. Set of 06 WRX brake pads
4. Set of shims (26633FA010 & 26633FA000)
5. Set of pad guides (26632FA020)
6. Set of Group-N gravel rotors 290mm X 18mm with 190mm parking brake (RSTR-2634)
7. Kartboy big brake adapter (KAR KB-016)
8. New Kartboy endlinks because one got a little melty...

More to come pics to come after its all installed (hopefully this helps save someone a itshay ton of time)

Thanks for the heads up. This may save me from a serious headache one day as my car has an R180 diff as well. Now just to keep my fingers crossed that nothing seizes up.... ;D

Seize.

Stealing your battery idea:

So my battery died... as a result I figured I'd get myself a slight upgrade (it weighs almost half a normal battery):

Wonder what the CCA is on that thing.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

SingallZ, can you provide the specs on that battery? Or give me enough to Google?
Cheers

I'm not SingallZ, but it looks like the default answer of "PC680" to me.

Yup, its a PC680, it has PHCA of 520 and CCA of 170. I'm not sure if it'd work for all Subies, I have no A/C and my radio is really more for show, so I'm not sure if it'd meet your power needs.

I got the battery and tie down from http://www.affordablebatteryspecialist.ca/, they were helpful and knowledgable.

So I just finished a bunch of test fitting and F@#$ing S#&$ this isn't going to work!!

Basically the adapters push the callipers out by 10mm's which cause the pads to be out of alignment (half on, half off), I should have thought of this ARGH!!!. I could switch to 04 STI rotor (316x20mm 190mm) and STI Brembo callipers but then I'd have clearance issues with my 16in Rims and snow tires (which I love). The other alternative is to use 96 Subaru SVX rear callipers and continue to use my worn/warped JDM rotors (non-vented 290mm X 10mm 190mm) but who knows when l'll find a replacement. If I try to use an SVX rotor (non-vented 290mm X 10mm 190mm) with a 5X114.3 bolt pattern I'd need to drill it out to a 5X100 pattern and I don't think that'll work. Alternatively I could import a set of JDM rotors but that costs $$$$ and I really don't see any benefits (i.e. NO vented rotors and NO 2 piston callipers).

My solution? Swap my JDM brake back plate for an 04 STI brake back plate. They both use an 190mm parking brake and my new vented group-n rotors will fit over it, plus my smaller 2 piston WRX callipers will bolt directly onto it (no adapter necessary). Since I'll need to pull off the hub to get at the back plate I'll do a bearing replacement while I'm in there and hopefully it'll all work.

So now I'm ordering this:
6 - 26704FE000 and 26704FE010
13 - 28016PA010 X 2
14 - 28035AA010 X 2
15 - 28015AA070 X 2
16 - 28015AA080 X 2
17 - ?? X 2 (gotta find the part # for this)

Wish me luck, and FYI to anyone in the same predicament this post on NASIOC has been incredibly helpful.

So I still haven't got all the parts for my rear brakes issue yet (they're stuck in CanadaPost limbo). Wound up just using 2 SVX callipers with the old rotors for now. They stop good enough, but those rotors will need to be replaced before summer.

On a happy note I think I'm going to be busy this spring/summer (going to be tons of fun):

I'll do a DIY for the trunk cage when I'm done since I can't seem to find any good install DIY's for them.

I installed the GTSpec trunk cage, haven't tested it out yet but it was a bit of work getting it in:

  • Take off bumper (fyi the license plate folds up so you can slide off the bumper, kinda cool)
  • Take out back seats an install strut tower ends (always use new nuts when doing this per SOA)
  • Install bumper ties

  • Install cross beam and front-back ties
  • Cut this do-hicky off the bumper strut

  • Tighten everything up and wala finished product. Hopefully I'll have slightly increased the rigidity of the car, and if not its some pretty trunk bling...

Worst case you can weld hooks to it and hold your grocery bags off the trunk floor when you corner.
