If you're leaking a lot of oil is it not possible you got oil in the alternator? It's right next to the valve cover on those cars.

That would definitely make a little smoke show.

But the alternator shouldn't get too hot to the touch across the entire surface, should it?

Alternators get pretty damn hot.

What he said. Alternators get heat-soaked pretty bad from rising heat in the engine compartment on top of just running hot to start with. It only gets worse as the bearings wear.

Some of the bigger GM trucks like the Escalade even feature a water-cooled alt.

I've seen an oil-soaked alt give off a pretty dramatic smoke show before.

Heat sink doesn't seem like it due to the location in the engine bay (intake side under the plenum).

Might be the bearing. Further investigation required. Unfortunately, the other alternator has a worse bearing, from what I can see. It doesn't spin nearly as easily.

Okay, after raiding James' STi for possible bolt candidates, I have found a bolt that will provide better support for the pivot of the alternator.

For future reference, it is one of the two that hold the AC compressor the the alternator bracket on the Subarus.

And I have figured out where the oil is leaking. It is leaking from the oil cooler line, which is part number 15771G (according to this diagram).

Other than that... the car seems good. Now, time to fix the mess that is my garage....

Should be seeing them on Wednesday, which is not ideal, but it's good!

Well, I dun uckfayed up the first time I installed the head gasket. It can go in two ways... one way blocks off the oil passage to the distributor, the other is the correct way.

First time was the wrong way. Well, whatever, got a new head gasket, put it in, correctly this time. Took  me 4 times of checking and double checking that it was indeed the correct way before I put the head on. Everything else went swimmingly.

Until I go to add the coolant.

Coolant leaks. All of the coolant leaks. Didn't even need to turn over the car and coolant just pisses out.

Got a camera under the car to see where it's coming from, and it appears to be from the block heater, which is in the worst possible spot to get hand tools up there.

So because I do not want to remove everything to install a new block heater, when it's garage stored, I'm weighing my options.

1) Remove the block heater plug (the wires, not the physical plug), JB Weld all of it and hope that it doesn't leak again.
2) Leave the block heater plug in, JB weld around it, hope it doesn't leak.
3) Remove and put in a new block heater assy.

That's my conundrum.

But also got other things for this. That'll come later.

Rock Auto had a clutch kit for half off, $50 bucks for a LUK. And ordered 2 freeze plugs from Toyota.

Why am I ordering a clutch? Well, 4th gear synchros was done borked. And I have the spare transmission sitting in the garage, so I'm gonna swap the transmission while I pull the engine.

And I"m pulling the engine to replace the block heater with a freeze plug. So might as well get everything done at the same time.

While also doing the exhaust.

Absolutely; it was one of those, "I just wanna drive the damn car, and uckfay the consequences" idea.

If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

Yikes, over 120 days.

Well, the MR2 was at Jackie's/Balance Auto for 5 months to get the transmission swapped and the leaking freeze plug changed.

That never happened and didn't get touched... asides from the tape and garbage bag to cover the broken window that happened.

Which I was never told about, and wasn't told about it when I went to go pick up the car.

Anyways, the car is sitting in my garage in Calgary while I'm in school, and unfortunately isn't gonna be a priority for a couple months.. or more :(
