Shifter - back and forth play (not side to side)
« on: September 13, 2017, 12:08:31 pm »
So after a recent replacement of the clutch about a month ago, i noticed now that there is a lot more play in the shifter.  I did a lot of google research and found a lot of the solutions are for side to side, but nothing on front to back.  I can basically move the shifter about 2 inches in any gear (and neutral) without any affect.

Anyone experienced this or have any solution?  I went under the car see the movement, and it seems the excessive play is beyond the linkage but into the transmission.  (I don't think the bushings are the issue because that whole linkage moves forward and backwards in those 2 inches of play).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure its not the rear shifter bushing? I just replaced all my shifter bushings and the rear one tightened up the forward and back play in the stick a lot. You will see it hiding up over the drive shaft. There will also be an exhaust heat shield in the way.

It looks like this :

https://www.rallysportdirect.com/part/shifter-bushings/kar-kb-003-rear-kartboy-rear-shifter-bushing

I would start there and see if yours looks super worn out or even broken? My old factory one was all cracked and gross. Made the shifter very notchy feeling after which i like. However it does add some tranny wine at low speeds in first and second gear. ( due to the stiffer bushing)

That does sound like a lot of movement though. Take the car back to where you got the clutch installed and ask?

Ya, i had a look underneath for that bushing as well as the front circular one.  They were my first assumption.  But there's no movement within the play of the shifter.  The movement i see is the item part number 35046 (in the top left):

that actually moves forwards and backwards so the bushings inside wouldn't be the issue either.

You need these:

https://www.fastwrx.com/products/tic-shift-linkage-bushings

edit::
possibly even the uni-joint itself

Check the spring pin while you're there

I have NFI

I'm with you, on both posts.

Nitram,
  • if the excess play is in the trunnion (u-joint) then you need those bushings.
  • if the excess play is further forward from that... that's all internal to the trans & I have no idea 'cause I've never done anything with that.

So I took a look again and this time with better lighting, and yes it is the trunnion bushings that failed.  Thanks guys.

So pretty pissed off right now.  Ordered all the bushing to replace and took everything apart.  Realized the reason for all that play is because Subaru Calgary didn't put the sleeve bearing back for one of the trunion when they replaced my clutch. So now I can't even put it all back without having to order that piece and redo all this.

Just grab a new uni joint. Give someone like VEX a call as they may have it in stock.

i think the unijoint is only for certain years.  I'm just gonna call subaru to complain a bit and have them order that piece for me.  Right now i threw in a shorter bearing i got with the TiC Shifter Pivot Bushing kit so it's drivable.

Here's a video of what it was doing before.  It's been fixed now.
