Bent Oil Pan?
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:29:19 am »
Hey Guys,

So I did my first oil change since going off the road into a snow bank on a TSD a while ago, and was planning on installing my fumoto quick drain valve. I get under there, and it looks like my oil pan is completely beat up. The drain plug comes out just like it should though, luckily... but unluckily, I had about 1L of oil in there. Im not burning oil that I can tell, and i dont have any oil on the garage floor, so im guessing that theres a small leak somewhere, and at high oil pressure, it sprays out a bit. It had been about 6000kms since my last oil change... and im using synthetic. I know I can expect a bit of loss, but over 3L???

Anyways.. crappy iphone pics:

So... here's my question: Im pretty sure its beat to hell and it needs to be replaced. How hard is that to do? Possible to do it with the motor in? Jer was saying I might need to pull my motor, or at least undo the motor mounts and jack it up (from the tranny).

Thoughts?

Thanks in Advance!

Just make sure it's the same. I know the 02's are notorious for having different parts.

You're seriously lucky that the oil pickup didn't get damaged...  :o

how would I know this had happened?

This thread is about a possible issue with the welding on some STi pickups, but it will nicely sum up what would happen.

"No oil pressure or low oil pressure"

"While on the freeway, my oil light flickered a second, then the sound of spoons in the garbage disposal from the engine. Total engine failure."

You would know.  No oil pickup = bye bye motor.

Here's a couple pics of oil pickup / pan clearance.  It's of a k20a2 oil pump and a k24 oil pan.  I'm sure your pan to pickup clearance is a lot greater than the one in the pic, but I just thought it'd be cool for you to see what's going on in there.

Thanks Grant! I've been running it like this for about 5-6000km so I think that it should be ok, otherwise something would have happened by now... but its getting replaced ASAP.

Holy crap! Good thing you caught it.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
