Cabin Air filter?
« on: June 12, 2009, 08:37:08 pm »
I'm tired of paying ~$60 for the OEM one.

But I'm also feeling like i should change it based on how nasty it was the previous times I changed it.

I found a model # from nasioc for a odor absorbing, activated charcoal filled one. FRAM CF10377

I was checking Partsource but they (as always) didn't have and didn't know what I was talking about.

So, other than the "make your own from furnace filters" what are the other options to replace it?

I got some from NAPA that look almost identical to the OEM ones for about $20 each. Seem do be doing the job. :) In Red Deer they had one in stock.

The paper inside was instructions for a 2002-03 Toyota Echo, and some for some other Toyota, Camry maybe.?!?

NAPA in town had one in stock and one a day later :)

How often should you be changing it?

depends how much dust your car sees.

I drive gravel a ton so I would change it more frequently, maybe 10-15000kms

Then i think it's time to change mine.
If i remember, the manual has instructions on how to do that right?

It's behind the glove box.

Ya (in my car) there is 9 screws around the glove box and one clip near the passenger door. Remove those and the whole part of the dash the glove compartment is in will pop down. Unclip the wire attached, and unclip the fan harness so you can easily access the filter compartment. 2 clips on the bottom of that door and you're in!

It sounds like a lot of work but i'm sure it's easier once you are actually doing it. :)

naw... it takes about 10 mins.

the hardest part is finding all 9 screws and getting to them at their weird angles...

after that its pretty simple...

Zaider you it bang on. Especially the upper ones LOL.

Anyone replaced their filter on a 08/09. The factory filter looks pretty cheap when I pulled it out the other day to see how dusty it was from the gravel roads I have been on. Anyone know if there are some higher quality ones out there like the NAPA ones for the previous generations?

the 08/09's filters are different, they come with a molded frame. I don't think NAPA has them listed yet... found out the hard way when i went to change mine. the new style is much easier to change though. no tools required

so i went to NAPA and i picked up a cabin air filter for $20, pretty good compared to $60 at the dealer and $89 at canadian tire! when i pulled out the old one in my car it was so dirty, but i do notice the OEM one the filter is dark grey (possibly the charcoal odor absorbing ones) and the NAPA one was just white and felt like the coffee filter material. i think i will try the custom 3M furnace filter i found here next time: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1077325

I had to share the packaging on the Wix filter. Note the gremlins getting sucked into the vent. Is that marketing or what. Comes complete with BIOSHIELD 75 Biostatic surface protectant! Exciting to see science at work isn't it?

$18.75 at Bowness Auto.

Wix Pn 24485 as per OP

I have 5 hand made air filters from that 3M fancy furnace filter stuff. If you need one I can toss one your way. I'm going to pull mine and see how well its fared this past year.

Pulled! Here's the results. I also did a v2.0 modification on the filter with expected good results!

Intake side

Underside

New vs Old

Mod v2.0 I've created duct tape soft seals for the edges of the filter. I noticed originally that there was some room for air to move around/bypass the filter

Notice how the soft edge seals tuck up against the compartment walls! The only way for the air is to go through the filter now.

So, pulled mine today just to look at it.
There are no a/m cabin filters for 08+ yet, so subaru is the only option.
I could probably ghetto up a replacement by cutting out the old paper, and replacing. It has a center support... not quite sure what to do about that.

Here it is after 1 yr:

Snax, www.rockauto.com shows same WIX part number as previous years for 2008. Is the paper part glued in or something? Can you pull it out sideways from under the middle support?
