First.  We worked on getting that dirty motheruckfayer of a cam bolt off.  uckfay that piece of itshay.

What was tried -

10mm key which promptly stipped
11/16 extractor socket.  Nope.
grinder to change the size of the bolt to fit a smaller extractor
big breaker bar and a snipe, as well as a powerful air impact
swearing at the bolt.  didnt help
drilling the bolt center out to the point that there was virtually nothing holding on the cam gear.
trying to break the head off.  nope.
hammering a 17mm socket on to  the bolt.

.....it just spun out.

ok.

So then we removed stuff.  And by we I mean Chase.

Its fine........ IMPOSSIBRLE!

Well now.  theres the problem!!

What I want to know is.  How is this even possible.  its UNPOSSIBLE.  how can you blow a hole in a valve without causing any damage anywhere else.

Good news is, the short block will be worth more.

Bad news is, Now my heads need new valves.  :(

Huh. That's an intake valve isn't it? Usually you see that kind of thing on a scorched exhaust valve.

How's that spark plug electrode lookin'? Looks detonatey to me.

over revved? valve float slamming the valve back onto the seat could cause a crack and the heat could start tearing it apart over time.  The leaning out could just be after the crack became a gap.

That would make more sense considering it's an intake valve. All the valves I've ever seen burned from detonation have been exhaust.

Yeah, Grant said that it's an exhaust valve and then questioned my manhood for not being able to tell the difference.

Words hurt, Grant.

Over revved?   Doubt it.  I may drive the car hard but Ive never missed a shift or anything that would have cause an over rev condition like you describe.  Ive intentionally run into the limiter at autocross though.  Its faster then shifting when the straight is too short.  Snackers will back me on that one hahaha.

I guess there is some good to take out of this though.  I have two good blocks and a head that needs new valves.  Not the worst thing in the world.

Are you going to keep the shortblock and become one of "those guys" that hoards parts?

I would.

When you drive a turbo Subaru, a spare shortblock is always a good idea ;)

I've got one. It's real purty to look at.

Hey. Jeff. I *really* need a new coffee table.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

This.

I may actually keep it as a spare.  Odds are ill sell it though.  I dont intend on using the STi as a daily driver anymore.  Ill still take it out often, but I dont want to drive it every day.  The mazda is WAY more comfortable.

No, his engine is a recent convert to the faith.

Have you discarded the drained engine oil?  You should keep it to anoint patrons to the Ghetto Garage...  After they pay their indulgence and tribute to the shortblock though.

However, I am quite disturbed by how quickly you are to abandon your faith:

I dont intend on using the STi as a daily driver anymore...  The mazda is WAY more comfortable.
