Jelly's Domesticated Car(s) - Nose Job
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:32:53 pm »
Welcome to my thread  :)

Being that I don't have a huge amount of disposable income, this 'build' won't be too exciting.   :'(  My end goals are to have a fun and reliable DD that the wife can also tolerate.  So, it will look like your standard downpipe and tune with sway bars car, but I wanted to keep a journal to see my progress, and to open it up for criticisms and suggestions.  I forsee a dump of posts to start, and then this thread will go quiet for months at a time until I gather funds and parts.

I would like to take summer/winter driving courses held by the local clubs, but at this point, I don't think I'll be tracking the car.

So, onto the car!

Dec 2015 update:

Laff.  One day, I'll sit down and tally up how much I've sunk into this car.  Even when I've resolved not to spend more money it, I manage to do so.  But oh well.

Pictures:

Summer 2011

It's an '07 STi, US model.  I am the third owner, and I bought it bone stock off a friend of mine at 40,000~ miles.  It now sits just shy of 60,000 miles.

It now sits at 72,000 miles.

About four years ago, I parked my car (then an '05 Accord Coupe) at my girlfriend's for a week, while we took her car up to Edmonton to spend time with the family during Christmas.  At this time, I lived in Calgary, and she lived in Airdrie.  When we came back, my tires were slashed.

Now we're married and I moved into Airdrie, I've owned the STi for one year, and it's already been vandalized THREE times!!  What gives?  Is this normal?

First month of owning it, it was sharpied across the trunk (along with a few other cars I was parked by).

At the end of July, it was booted, and then egged just a couple days ago (albeit, it wasn't egged as badly as another car couple stalls down).

I think the only time it was intentionally targeted was when it was given a swift kick, because... it was it the only car in the lot.

I really like LDS' attitude with his dent, and was tempted to keep this one too.  If I did, I would've changed that frown upside down to a smiley face just to give the message that I'm not bitter over it.  Buuut...  the people at ECO Dentworks are so cool.  I couldn't help myself but to give them my money.  They did a fantastic job fixing it up.

History of my other cars being vandalised.

  • My first car was a '92 Accord EX-R.  In 2002 or 2003, it was keyed across two passenger doors while I was helping clean up a house in a lower-income area of Calgary.
  • The '05 Accord as mentioned earlier
  • On the DAY OF MY WEDDING, my '05 TSX was egged all over the driver side (in Edmonton)

You'd think with this kind of track record, I'm some kind of A-hole right?  My dad was like, "jeeze... have you made a lot of enemies?"  Honestly, I'm a nice guy.  But I definitely do-not believe in Karma.

--Edit--

So, I'm kind of stuck in a rut.  I knew it would be foolish to buy this car when I don't have a garage...  but the opportunity was great and I couldn't pass.  I guess I also had the idiot/naive notion that people don't vandalize other peoples stuff, despite my already well versed experience with that.  Now, as I see it, my options are:

  • Do nothing.  Life goes on.  Deal with the vandalism as it comes
  • Sell the car.  I've had my year.  Buy another one down the road when we have a house with a garage
  • Store it until we have a house with a garage
  • Go wingless, or get a WRX spoiler.  Maybe the STi wing draws too much attention

To my surprise, my wife is very much against the idea of selling the car, or changing the wing.   :o  (I think wingless looks odd, but the WRX spoiler I could do).  But she was the one who thought of putting it in storage.

Sad times :(

Thanks!

Earlier this summer, I installed the TWM Shortshifter and the GD Outrigger bushings.  Both went smoothly but I didn't have my torque wrench.

One problem with the SS kit.  The reverse lockout is very resistant to move.  On very hot days, I need two hands to pull it up.  I always have to manually push it back down.  The instructions said to lightly grease the sound deadening part with Lithium based grease, which I did.

I took it apart twice today.  Cleaned it off each time, greased it liberally the first time, and lightly again the second time.  It's still really sticky.  Any suggestions?  Should I try another type of grease or oil?

I also got my torque wrench back, so I decided to make sure those bolts for the Outrigger bushings were torqued up to spec.  (btw, this forum is an excellent resource for it's collection of guides and How-To's.  They certainly give me more confidence in trying these things out).

Ok...  12mm bolts, 24 ft-lbs.  One down, two down, three down, four-snap!  Crap me :(  I snapped it.

Not a good day today :(

Yeah, I'd love to!  :)  Do you guys meet every Tuesday?  I've been meaning to show up the past year, but every time I find out about a Peter's or wings meet, I've already missed it by two days :(

I found that location while driving down some back road.  I'm sure it was a farmer's private property, so I kind of just dove in, took as many as I could in one minute, and drove out before they could chase me with shotguns and rifles.

Hmm...  maybe this kind of behaviour is why my car gets hit on so much...

Thanks for the compliments :D  I've seen your photos too, so that means a lot!

The tuesday meets are just as few guys grabbing coffee. The normal Peter's/wing meets are normally on Wednesday.. But you should show up anyways.

It will help. I feel I get cut off my trucks left and right on my daily commute to work just because of the STi wing. Or someone lines up next to me at a light and suddenly its a competition of who can get to the next red light fastest.  :-\

*ugh*  I've been looking at wingless STi's, and...  they're starting to grow on me.  But they look better slammed.  Ohwell, it looks like I'll be keeping the wing, and if there's another incident with the car, I'll do something productive with my rage like drown a litter of kittens.

Thanks!  I studied through yours and Tenacious' installs extensively before making my decision to purchase the lenses.  But I will definitely call you up when I install them!

In August, I picked up an Invidia catted DP and a nice heat shield from RA motorsports.  I'm very stoked to install these...  This is by no means a show car, but I'm such a sucker for engine bling.  I'm also very excited about the gains with the DP...

First things first, I need gaskets, and cash for the tuning.   :'(

Some pics!

> 120 days update:

Well, a couple months back, I had my car fixed:

I don't have pictures of it installed, but it does looks a bit weird to me.  There is also way too much visibility out the back window.  But...  Passeryby's and neighbors don't seem to have such a hard on for trashing the poor thing so it might be a keeper.  The look is growing on me, but I do miss my big overcompensating but perfectly functional wing.

KennyB also wrapped my center console last weekend:

I'm very happy with it and it's made a dramatic improvement to the interior of the car.  There are two spots that I wasn't satisfied with, but Kenny has been gracious enough to try and fix these issues.  I would absolutely recommend him for any of your wrapping needs.

I had my fingers on Zaider's RCE lowering camber plates for a while, but after driving in Edmonton (http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=245.msg429286#msg429286) last week (which may be the next place of residence), I decided to abandon that notion.

I also decided not to install the CAI.  I have mixed feelings about that buuut...  I think it was the better choice for me.

Alas, I haven't driven the car for too long and I have no real good reason for that (other than the recalled oil filter).   This has had a noticeable effect and the withdrawal has made me a moodier person  >:(

Still, Daylights Savings is just a bright reminder that Spring is on it's way.  The anticipation of installing the downpipe and getting the car tuned is starting to kill me.

My funds are tightly budgeted so I'm really trying to be prudent...  but should I get the car dyno'd before I do the mods?  I think it'd be fun to have some before/after numbers, but it would be more for narcissistic reasons than educational.

@ idle!!  And my oil pressure is through the roof!

Just kidding...  I haven't hooked up the gauges to the sensors/senders yet, so I guess this is it's default/no data setting.

Yesterday was a beautiful and dry day, but I spent the entire afternoon/evening with school activities  >:(  Today was wet and windy, but being so bummed about missing yesterday's opportunity, I decided to start installing stuff anyway.

This install helped a lot: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2182561

On the interior side, the electrical went pretty smoothly.  I'm so glad that everything worked the first time.  Opening ceremony, dimming, closing...  So cool!!   ^-^  And crimping is so much easier than soldering...  Man I suck at soldering.

On the engine bay side... I learned a lot.  Taking out the alternator was much easier than I expected, but lining up the holes to put the bolt back through was  :o

A quick question:  I couldn't screw the pressure sender all the way into the bung.  Is that OK?  You can see the yellow teflon dividing the bung and the sensor's hex.

I guess I'll know if it's starts spewing oil, but if anyone has tips or tools to get that thing the rest of the way; I was beginning to strip the edges...

So now, all that's left is to wire everything through the firewall but it got too cold and dark for that.

Tomorrow's forecast is even worse than today's :(  So...  Can I borrow a garage?   http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=34213.msg432233#new

Oil pressure sender has a tapered thread. Just make it tight, don't worry about the gap.
