Sean's Yellow C5 - Good Buddy
« on: February 27, 2016, 10:42:07 pm »
Scroll to the bottom of #1 to see the car's current state

Following Ambystom and frcefed's lead, I am starting a thread before taking possession of my car. Since the car is currently hibernating in an underground garage, and the ramp is full of ice, I probably will not be able to drive it home till late March/early April. Until then, this thread's main purpose is a note pad for research and discussion.

Also, I am thinking this car may deserve a name. Name suggestions are needed! Current candidates: wasp, hornet, Clyde (Sean-ie and Clyde), and Jake (official GM Corvette R name). We need someone like Mark Wahlberg in Ted, who can bust out 20 white trashy male names in 30 seconds.

Now onto what the car has:
Solid EBC rotors
EBC yellow pads
Motul 600 brake fluid
Stainless steel brake lines at all four corners
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires

Under the hood, it has a Texas Speed Performance LS3 418 ci (6.8L!) short block
4.065" bore
Callies Compstar 6.125' H-beam connecting rod set
TSP Wiseco Forged piston set
TSP LS3 camshaft 231/236, .641'/.615', 112 LSA
PRC .650' dual spring kit
TSP 7.4 chromemoly pushrod
Stock LS6 heads and intake manifold
Monster Clutch stage 2
Lightweight flywheel
Vararam cold air intake
BBK Shorty headers
Corsa Extreme Catback Exhaust
B&M Ripper short shifter

Let's see some photos!

Here it is when I first saw it in the underground garage. I like the C5R style headlights much better than the stock flip up headlights. There is also almost 20 pounds per side of weight saving.

And here are some photos by WSC's resident photographer, some say he taught James Bond how to drive and shoot, and that his camera's shutter is sync'ed to his blinks. All we know is, he's called Grant C!

Congrats. What's the estimated power?
Thank you. 400 whp is what I have been told. It is also said to have a beefy low end and mid range torque. I will post the dyno sheet when I get it. I am new to old school hot rodding. My limited research suggests that there is more power to be had if I do some head work, and swap on a FAST intake manifold and throttle body. The easiest way to go is probably P&P LS3 heads, but I've read LS3 heads are known for oil starvation at the track. I may eventually P&P the LS6 heads, and swap on some FAST LSXR intake manifold and 102mm throttle body. Power really is not a concern as I am sure there is more than I can handle. I should get a good oil cooler set up before more power.

2 weeks? I guess I should clarify that the track photos are from 3 years ago, when the previous owner took the car to Stratotech. He put down a 67.8s lap on Michelin PS2's. I wish that track was still open so I could see how I'd do in this car.

Haha, as I was scrolling down I was about to say that car looked familiar...  ;)

The C5 z06 is a very nice choice for "cheap speed".

Indeed! Just updated post #2 and starting to realize it's not THAT cheap haha. I considered a few cars before deciding on this C5Z06. First I wanted a 987 cayman s, but they are all in the 30~35k range, and things may get real expensive real quick with the P-Tax. So I looked into 986 boxster s, since they are getting up there in age and the IMS/RMS issues are getting blown out of proportion, I could pick one up for $13~18k. But there are likely a lot of maintenance items I need to take care of immediately, including IMS/RMS and clutch. And after sinking a lot of money into maintenance, it's still a 250~280 hp car. Then I thought I like the 986/987 platform but don't want to deal with that Porsche engine, how about we do a Renegade V8 swap >:D? There's a very detailed thread documenting one of these swaps, as it turns out the swap is not as plug and play as Renegade says it is, and there are a lot of additional parts and fabrication needed. By the time it's all said and done, we'd be looking at $30K USD for the whole project, and I would need to spend the whole year wrenching.

Then I found this C5Z06. MR layout, already has a good engine, and capable out of the box. The price was right too. With a few bolt on parts and some good tires, I think this thing is going to be a lot of fun.

Hah. This is awesome. I'm not a huge can of the C5 rear end, but I am a fan of what a C5 can do.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

I feel the same way about the c5 rear end. I think I will eventually get over it, or fix it with a big wing like the c5r style haha.

FMR. Engine shoved far back, and transaxle out in the back.

Edit: you were right. Stock C5 Z06 tips the scale at 3118 lbs with 53/47 distribution.

Update: the C5Z06 is officially mine. It makes me sad that I can't drive it for probably another month.

On a different note, I was looking into steering wheels, and found this new MOMO GT50. I really dig the look. Does the yellow tubing make it look rice? I think it goes with the car's exterior color well.

Haha, my Legacy's steering wheel is MOMO branded, I think some other Subaru's are as well. I find it difficult finding an aftermarket steering wheel that doesn't look too racecar or ... to rice. This GT50 has the OEM+ look I'm looking for, and it will get rid of the stock malibu/impala bus style big steering wheel. $329 USD isn't cheap, but it costs less than most Suabru aftermarket wheels (GTSpec and DAMD).

Doesn't look that nice in the GTI interior you posted... I bet it would fit the C5.
