Wish they had taken pictures of unloading from the car hauler onto a flatbed, that sounds sketchy and/or hilarious as hell. Glad it's home.

Did you know about the bent wheel when you bought it?

I'm glad there were no pictures, sounds like unneeded stress. I never knew about the bent rim until the car was purchased and went through the second inspection at the shop in Japan. I was going to buy new rims and tires anyhow, so it doesn't really bother me.

Neat thing about the functional brake cooling! That's pretty cool!

RPF1s, Falkens, I'm pleased with everything I can see. 5Zigen for mad JDM street cred, how loud is it?

I actually really like the exhaust. It's stainless, the welds are pretty, and it looks OEM. It was quiet when I drove it for the 1 minute it took to drive it out of the shop and then into my garage. I'll update once the cars on the road in the summer.

Nice and dirty, but looks great nonetheless! Looking forward to some progress!

It's killing me to have it covered in that much mud and dirt.

Those brake ducts were on early 02 WRX here in North America, and all the bugeye fender liners have the shape but not the bottom plate to contain it!

So only the STi's have the vent?

I had an 02 WRX that had them - it’s one of the slight differences from the first few off the line (like the rear brake pads)
Most of the bugeyes were missing the little piece that closes the vent in.

^this. The Bugeye STI's all came with the ducts and vents, but only early 2002 North American spec WRX's came with the cap that attaches to the fender liner to direct the air towards the brakes. Subaru still used the same fender liners in later models WRX's and STI's but did not offer the cap to close off the duct to allow the air to flow towards the brakes.

It's always odd to find better options on early production models, but that's the case with the bugeyes.

Car looks good! If you wanted to get another one of the STI key's cut for a spare set, go to a dealer and ask them for a key for a 2004 STI. It's the same key blank and they should be able to get it cut at any key cutting place. I had one of those keys for my 2002 WRX that I bought the blank key from the dealer and had it cut at Home Hardware..lol The benefit of bugeyes is there is no immobilizer built into the key, so you can get spares cut easily and can get the cool STI key.

Subaru sure does a better job undercoating these cars than Mitsubishi, looks nice and clean!
The 3 is raw.  Lighter than more agile.  The 6 probably feels like a 747.  And by that contrast, my STI probably feels like the Hindenburg.  So GR's are like the International Space Station.

Car so nice! I'm jelly! :)

What is the plan for your V7 wheels? Going to be using them as a winter set I imagine?

I haven't actually checked... I'm going to say no since I didn't see a fog light button in the interior.

I'm not going to be driving the vehicle in the winter, so I have no plan. Maybe I'll get the bend fixed and sell them?

Also, does anyone know a Canadian site where you can buy OEM Subaru parts from?

The hubcentric rings I had ordered had been forgotten so it was nice to see them eventually show up.

Then I took things apart.

Turbo was is great condition. I played with its shaft and nothing happened.

I wasn't sure if my tranny had an front open diff or a LSD. Turns out its got the A.P. suretrac front LSD.

Pin thing.

Lot's of witchcraft later.

I originally wanted to to pull the motor because I thought it would be a good idea to check out the clutch before I did a bunch of work to the engine then find out right after it needed a new clutch. Turned out to be a good idea. The clutch was down to the rivets. The pilot bearing and throwout bearing were shot too. Oh, and it needs a new crank case seal.

Fuggin JDMs, both of mine have needed a new clutch. Great work here. I am excited for this thread.

I guess I was lucky then... My first had a decent amount of life left on her, and my STI seemed to have had a next to new clutch in it!

100% great stuff though.

Thanks everyone.

I'm looking forward to see what the v7 Ej207 is like as well.... actually just the entire car in general. I've driven a 93 WRX, 04 STI, 15 WRX and 15 STI so I should hopefully have a good idea of how it compares to the rest of the lineup.

Now I just need to order a itshay ton of parts/seals/gaskets/hoses.

Pictures.

Spark plugs look good. They're the right color; no signs of detonation or running lean, basically looking normal.

Everything was un-shamelessly old.... I need to buy new gaskets and hoses.

i remember my 02 wrx had the brake ducts too, if i recall correctly they looked functional, i thought the inlet was the hole below the foglight though, so i could be wrong

if it doesn't have foglights you can order a kit from subarugenuineparts that includes new fogs and the switch

Are you still able to post a picture of the transmission snout? The only shot of it is just a bit too far away to determine if there is any wear. It would be interesting to know/see how it's holding up since the two bearings are shot.

No, you're right. I re-looked at it and its under the fog light.

I inspected it when I took the engine out and it was fine. The bearings weren't seized so its not like the inside casing of the bearing was static and not rotating with the transmission shaft.

Just get the regular TCKWP328 kit. The racing belt sheds the blue coating and gums up the idlers.

Nice purchase. I'm a big fan of the tune up you're doing and all the attention to detail given.

I'm right now cleaning up and doing a lot of work after my turbo died and noticing some oil starvation so I hope it's not uncouth to comment on a few you may find worthwhile to check while you have things apart (if you haven't already): 1) starter motor: disassemble, clean the bushing dust and relube the actuator (possibly even running new cables) - doing so surprisingly improved starting, 2) replace the alternator belt loop's tensioner pulley (73131FC000) as this failed on my mom's Outback stranding her on HWY63 and started to squeek on my Impreza, 3) banjo bolt filters for the turbo's oil supply line have been known to clog, 4) cleaning and flow testing the injectors with Stefan at PFI in High River, and 5) Killer B oil pickup because I've read the oem one really likes to fail.

I have an extra uncut blue STI key, pm me if you're interested.

Never the less, brilliant project, all the best!
