10secdream's 2003 NB Mazda Miata - Choo Choo Whoosh Time

10secdream's 2003 NB Mazda Miata
Picked up July 6, 2018 with 104,250km

The race car bug bit me and after owning my British Racing Green Miata for 2 months I went full circle and came back to looking at this beautiful 2003 Mazda Miata "Shinsen Edition" (that I looked at before I bought my 1994 Miata) that is a great basis for lapping days and autocross (Not at all competitive with me behind the wheel in SSM). I really do love the NA but I had a really hard time convincing myself it would be a good idea to hack apart such a clean and well kept car. I thought it was best decision just to part ways and to look into something that is already modified to where I would want it and then to take it further. The vehicle itself is a a special edition "Shinsen" that is painted in beautiful Titanium Grey Metallic.

Well I managed to get a ride down to Calgary on Friday and pick up the car from the previous owner. The YYC WSC crew was very hospitable as always and chauffeured me to my first "Barlow" meet on Friday night. It was exactly as I expected jail bate, vapes, lots of itshay boxes and a burnout pit. Saturday rolled around and I got to roll with the YYC crew to the Sylvan meet. I pretty much need earplugs for the highway even with the silencer in due to the tall gearing in the rear. At highway speeds (120km/hr) the RPMs hovered right around 4100. Overall the car never skipped a beat for the entire trip and even managed to get in the 9's for few economy. Not too bad for a supercharged miata with a big wing and the tall gearing in the rear end.

I was roped into it. Someone put on their burnout tires and I was expecting a smoke show but was left hanging.

3rd Autocross event was on Sunday and I was debating whether or not I should take the new car or the better prepped NA. I decided to take the NB for a shakedown. In preparation I managed to get the Sparco seat installed to my liking, change the engine oil/filter and change the rear differential oil. The tires are completely toast and I knew that going into the event but I thought it would be a good time to get a feel for the car and see how it does. I ended up placing middle of the pack RAW time. Car is obviously way more capable than me but given the lack of seat time (2 days of ownership) and the old worn out tires I was pretty happy.

Car looked and sounded good at the autocross. ES seems like a dead class now.

Excellent. You will also be out of ES as well 8)

Ordered some new tires for the car. This car will mostly see lapping days and autocross so I went with tires that are a bit more orientated for track. In the miata community one of the spec racing tires is Maxxis RC-1. I decided to give them a shot as they perform similar to Nitto NT01 but cost about $50 less per tire.

High rippums = short gearing.

But yo, sick ride. I think it's what we all want. A tiny car with a big wang.

I went with 225/45/15 and my wheels are 15x9 +35mm. In the Miata world a slight stretch tire is faster than a square. Idk why that is and it doesn't make sense but it is well documented. Right now I am pretty much at the limits for wheels/tires without rolling and pulling the fenders. I already have to run 2.5" coil springs to avoid hitting the inside of the wheel.

Do it.  Do it for 14 year old Jory who you've slapped on the backburner with your all stock S2k and GTI.

Right now I am pretty much at the limits for wheels/tires without rolling and pulling the fenders.

They haven't been rolled/pulled already?  Are they at 2.5" in the pictures?  Honestly, the gap looks perfect.

Well already starting to stock up on parts. Picked up a 600 series Setrab 19 row oil cooler, some -10an fittings and 10' of line. Just need to get a thermostatic sandwich plate (Mocal) and then I can mock it up this winter.

I've known of this car for a while, and I'm glad you are passionate about it!  :)

I'm guessing one of the reasons 225 tires preform better is the reduced rotational mass due to the reduced weight of the tires themselves, and since the miata is such a light car with well sorted suspension, tires don't wear much anyway. ::)
