Jackal's Project "Brynn", 2007 Lotus Elise Supercharged
« on: November 04, 2018, 06:28:40 pm »
Well I've gone and done it again. I've had my eye on a car for the last little while and finally on Nov 2 2018 was able to move on it.  It's a car I have pined for for a good long while and have been thinking that I may as well get one while I'm still able to enjoy it.

I've always felt like i had a score to settle with a Lotus after the Se7en I built (http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=23514.0) never got to the stage where I could enjoy her.  That dream started in 2011 and has continued to eat at me that I never saw it through to completion.  Fast forward almost 8 years and my tastes have changed slightly.  I want the raw feel the Se7en offers,  but I now also want heat and cooling... A radio,  and a top and doors that close and can be put up in moments,  not lots and lots of moments. The Elise is a great cross section of those desires.

Famous quotes about the Elise.

"The purest sports car on the planet... The bottom line is that the new Elise is arguably the most exciting sports car in the world to drive. It's a must have for any enthusiast and will outperform anything in its segment... As for the car's handling, what is there left to say about the Elise that hasn't already been mentioned. It has garnered more than 30 awards from virtually every enthusiast publication and organization in Europe... Arguably the most enjoyable car on the planet to drive... The Elise also embraces the heritage of one the most celebrated marques in racing history."
-Road&Track Nov. '03

"one of the best handling cars in the universe."
-Top Gear

But the fact is, remove the straight-line grun from the equation, and the Elise 111R is a more rewarding steer than the Ferrari. Savour the moment. Cars that change your life view don't come along every day."
-AutoCar Magazine, March 2004 on Elise 111R vs. Ferrari 360 Modena CS

"You can run over an insect, and know just from the messages coming through the wheel how many legs the insect had...was it a beetle or was it a spider? — Spider".
-Jeremy Clarkson

With that said,  I introduce to you... Project Brynn.

As of now I don't have a list of mods to do other than get her paint corrected,  and some vinyl to add the Jackal stripes and some numbers for the auto-x season next year.  I likely won't do much to her other than enjoy her for the time being.

Very nice.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

Sweet.  I mean, the boy ricer in me was hoping that grey one at the sketch dealership was the one, especially when you were saying there were ways to dealing with sketch dealers, but I'm glad you found what you wanted.

I have ways in dealing with troublesome dealers,  but not if the car itself is suspect. In that case, I was not able to drive the car, and so the little items that could have been indicators of larger issues could not be verified with a test drive.

I do like the look of it,  however I prefer the blank slate that Brynn provides.  I don't have to think about holes previously made, or modifications beyond the Larini exhaust that was added.

The car makes the guy shaking your hand look like a GIANT.

Did he have much headroom in the Lotus?

Watching him get in and out was pretty funny. Super awesome guy. He’s in the Alberta Se7ens group as well.

First of the ordered items has landed.  It's not terribly exciting as it's just door pins, but it should help me to reduce the clatter that goes on in these cars.

I like the look of the widebody Elise,  but I'm thinking that this particular car will remain relatively stock body wise.... until i go full chicken with AutoX.

Just jotting down my thoughts on a wheel selection. I'd like the minimum of wide spokes.  A five or six spoke would be preferred,  and I'm just starting to familiarize myself with the implications of he different sizes.  I'm open to the 15" staggered setup as long as it saves me a significant amount of weight. I'd like to get them in a copper or bronze colour if i can as I don't want to be wasting time with getting them sprayed.

SSR Type-C in Bronze.
Available in 15" (6.5 or 7 wide) and 16" (7" wide) Offsets 30 and 35.

Volk TE37 in Bronze
Only available in 15" and 16".(5.5" and 6.5" wide respectively) Offsets 25

Standard Lotus Elise Wheel Sizes
Wheel                      front size   off set   weight   rear size     off set   weight
Lotus base cast               16 x 5.5   ET31            15.2              17 x 7.5      ET38   21.0
Lotus LSS forged       16 x 6.5   ET31            13.2              17 x 7.5      ET38   15.2
SSR Competition       16 x 6.5   ET32            11.0              17 x 7.5      ET37   13.3
RAC Monolites               16 x 7                       11.2              17 x 8              13.2
Toybox 48                     16 x 7                       12.0              17 x 8              13.7

Wheel bolts are 4 x 100mm.

Lug nuts are 19 mm/M12/1.5 mm pitch; center bore is 56.6 mm.

These look so good.

Also, I know they're everywhere, but have you considered RP-F1's?

I talked to the guys at Enkei directly and as far as Enkei's go,  they are the only ones that fit the stock 16"/17" setup that comes from stock. I like them,  but I'm always looking for the minimal number of spokes.

Enkeis are nice and light too. And the price is reasonable. Also, homie, they look good:

Sounds like what you really want is a set of Status Grinders:

I'm a fan of Enkei's. I've had them on a couple of my cars so far. I have been considering them because the cost/lightness is pretty great. That last one may be too few spokes though.  Let's say I'd prefer around 5-6 spokes.
