catted vs catless downpipe
« on: November 12, 2014, 12:20:56 am »
interested in getting an exhaust in the near future for the 04 sti i just grabbed. it is my daily driver for now and i am considering some tasteful mods

i am kinda feelin the idea of getting the cobb exhaust because it has a legal size exhaust tip and I'm very tired of exhaust tickets over the years. this dp goes down to a 2.5" catback i have read..
just wanted to know what people thought of their cobb exhausts are you happy with it?

should i bother with the cobb catted dp & exhaust or just stick to what i know, a catless dp, 3" exhaust w/oversized tip, & extremely loud lol
I'm more of a tomei expreme ti kind of guy but willing to try something new

any advice is nice thanks

It comes down to what you want. If you're tired of being pulled over than a Cobb looks stock ish  so that helps. If you like loud cars than get a tomei. Both a quality parts.

Just remember that once you get a down pipe you need to have a tune, Whether it's a pro tune or ots map from cobb.

Invidia also offers a catted DP which stays 3" all the way through.  If we stick to that brand, they have two catbacks:
  • the N1 which is similar to but not as big to the Tomei, but maybe just as loud,
  • and the G200 which has a huge tip, but is much quieter
Both are available with a burnt titanium tip but the rest of the exhaust system is not titanium.  So...  If it's loud and weight savings, then go Tomei.

I run the cobb, love it. It's tastefully loud and throaty, and my friends all say they can definitely hear me coming but it's not obnoxious.

it might be cheaper to buy them separate from different vendors, taxes and duty bringing it to canada will be quite a bit on top of whats listed on cobbs site

this, or go local and support your local performance shops - chances are it will still be cheaper then from ordering it directly from COBB + duties and taxes

What do you mean by "works with titanium"? Unobtainium Welding can make you a custom titanium piece that will be better quality than virtually anything else you can get but you can expect a nice bill for it.

Call First Gear out of Edmonton if you want Invidia or Tomei as they are dealers and offer good prices.

If you go catless, you won't ever have to worry about replacing the cat. However, with a catless DP you get other so called "worries". You have to monitor your boost closely for one, as there will be a tendency to overboost.

I'd also consider an EWG, if thinking about a catless DP. If you go catted, I'd suggest something that has the cat placed underneath the car, away from the axle boot (Cobb's DP is designed like this).

If its your DD, Catted. Absolutely. No question. The smell of the fumes are not worth the performance or the cost savings.

I ran catless on my supra that I DD'd for a couple years, the fumes when stuck at a light were pretty miserable at times, not to mention the guys who are constantly stuck driving behind you.

I don't mind the smell myself, but as you said, others might.

Also, the fumes stick to clothing, and then you smell funny for a while. Especially after you park, exit the car and stick around for a few minutes while getting your stuff.

This is more of a question regarding the function of catted v catless, which is why i clicked the link...hopefully i'm not thread-jacking :P

I'm looking into this option myself and I want to go Catless, but this leads to overboosting, which is a large pile of 'nope'.  It's rumored the EWG will reduce overboosting or a EBC, but won't cure it fully and i do not want any part of a EWG as they sound horrible and ruin our previous "bru bru" rumble.

I'm aware that a protune can also help this...but i'm looking for additional add-ons or alternatives to run a Catless with as minimal overboosting as possible.  Would a different turbo help?  Or different piping somewhere that i'm missing?

You can run a hybrid setup to deal with Catless (look at Zaider, Hurricane and CanehdianJ's threads for that one), as well as Port and polishing the internal wastegate, or running an external wastegate.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.
