Should I buy rotas?
« on: August 08, 2015, 01:36:58 pm »
I recall Rota got lots of hate for wheels breaking and shoddy quality. I'm looking for some 18" wheels for my winter setup just for DD'ing. They should be fine for that, no?

for the most part Rota's are good, GST used them on the global time attack car and were doing pretty well with them. They have since moved on to different company. Rota's have a bad name for being reps and yes the quality isn't up to the standard they are replicating but you get what you pay for.

They'll be fine for DD, but why 18" for winters?

If you can make the jump do it! !8" rubber is significantly more over the course of a cars life.

I love my rotas. I belive a lot of the hate came from mistaking them from an even further knockoff wheel called roja, or so ive heard.
Farewell :(  Your exhaust was inspirational.

Why, did Rota do any of their own designs?  Or are they aping the style of people who did their own R&D, design, testing, and marketing?

Two cases I'm okay with rotas...
  • specific sizes/bolt patterns that would otherwise need you to go custom  (ie 15" 4x110 wheels)
  • copying OEM wheels (ie. Rota R-Spec are copies of JDM DC2 ITR wheels in different centre bore)

Didn't Roja exist before Rota?

Rotas made good winter wheels. They look good, but they're cheap enough you don't give a itshay if they get chipped or curbed.

+1 for 17" wheels! They have the sidewall you need for a winter tire, and they look great on a spec b!

They'll be fine for DD, but why 18" for winters?

My Spec B has 18" wheels stock and came with a set of summers and winters when I bought it. But only one set of wheels. Want a second to mount the other set to so I can swap them over myself without getting them mounted/balanced. Chances are I'll sell the car before either set needs replacing, and the ride is significantly softer after driving the s2k all summer, so no worries there lol. Plus, I just think the size looks better and fills the wheel wells better. I've always preferred larger wheels, I wanted 18's for the s2k but couldn't find any good deals.
