Yep, Taylor automotive here in Williams lake, is actually pretty knowledgeable. As soon as I asked if the tob was an skf bearing, the guy was like "I'm assuming you're going to oem parts here" and filled in the blanks for the rest without me even asking.

I was prepared for crazy prices, but the actual hubris encountered is still staggering.

I remember when we bought Jory's 3rd gen 4Runner, the seller told us about how the truck once stalled on her daughter so she had it towed to the local (for Cochrane) Toyota dealership and literally gave them a blank cheque to do whatever the truck needed.

It was an eye-watering invoice. I want to say they even replaced a seat?

No wonder the Normals keep buying new cars.

It stalled and leaked some coolant, so she took it to Cochrane toyota, and I think they went ham in the engine bay. water pump, timing, oil pump, bunch of other stuff.

Sounds like the perfect buy.
The 3 is raw.  Lighter than more agile.  The 6 probably feels like a 747.  And by that contrast, my STI probably feels like the Hindenburg.  So GR's are like the International Space Station.

I still think it's the best used car deal any of us have ever scored. Great truck.

I got my first 2001 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab for 6400$ back in 2007. I think that was the best deal I ever got on a truck. It had like 260,000 km but was always serviced at the dealership, and they had just gone through the whole truck. I sold it 3 years later for 10k at 340,000 km and then bought the worst car I ever bought... which is also why I am here.

It’s still running after being rolled, has around 400k now.

I will add, the truck also drives great for having 400k. Feels like it has half the mileage. Can't go wrong with a 3rd gen regardless how many km it has

So young, so naive. Also, I asked to be wished luck and no one wished it, so I guess its WSC's fault. Also some OG's in that thread!

:'( RIP in peace.

To be fair, if me now with the resources available today got the car it wouldn't have been as bad.

Car showed up, needed rear diff main seal, crank seal, timing belt, brake rotors and pads, struts, radiator, coil packs, oil pump (which was unknown common failure at the time, the feedback I got from Vex at the time "don't need to worry about replacing it, we have never seen one fail".. that was the main source of my issues. The timing belt was off the car like 5-6 times throughout my ownership of the car because it kept pushing crank seals out). Importer didn't really care about all the issues that were missed in his "inspection" in Japan lol, and to be fair an importer is only as good as the information given to them by whoever they're using for an exporter or whoever was doing their "inspections."

And since the info wasn't really out there and readily available (Forum knowledge wasn't what it is today, people weren't as familiar with JDMs, and there was no facebook car groups), and Vex wasn't about to share what crossed over for parts (they said it was bad for business lol), I went to the JDM Subaru specialists at the time Vex Performance while they were still in Red Deer and got bent over haha. Asked for the cheapest options, got sold DBA rotors, Endless brake pads, Koyo radiator, Tomei kevlar timing belt lol 1360$ later as a poor student, and it was my own damn fault from being naive.

Oh man, thats a brutal story. Such a dice roll with imports, because you cant actually go and look yourself... and you cant say no once it shows up lol.

Things I need still:
-Crank Pulley Bolt!!!
-New PCV Grommet
-PCV Valve.

Pulling the tube seals out of the valve covers was zero fun. Felt very much like I was going to damage something. Tried tapping them out from the top and they literally shattered like glass.
Apply heat gun, blunt chisel, and smash away...

Also, I picked up the fancy-assay OEM gasket material at the dealer and ordered a pilot bearing from California. Intake gaskets were in rough shape, so I ordered some replacements... much to my dismay, they are not layered metal and rubber like the OEMs, but regular gasket material with silicone rings... Ah well hope they work!
Did some reading about how to get the damn crank pulley and bolt off without being attached to a transmission and wheels... Gonna need a friend haha

Saw these two rad things this week. Oh how I wish I had this suzuki. Its perfect.

Yeah, you need a trustworthy importer / exporter, that is for sure. I have imported 3 others since then and never had an issue once I found someone trustworthy lol.

Pics of shattered tubes? I would never have thought about that.

I've heard that shattering her tubes only happens when you bottom out too many times.
